GROUP INFLUENCE REFLECTION Student Name – Gurleen Kaur Liberal Studies – Conestoga College LIBS1085 – Section 7 – Psychology Today Professor Name – Elham Satvat Date of Submission – Dec 3 rd , 2023 INTRODUCTION I would like to describe a situation when I was influenced by my family and friends for purchasing a smartphone when I was coming abroad. Well, there were two situations, my family wanted me to purchase smartphone which we should be affordable but on the other hand my friends who were already studying in Canada insisted me to buy one with best specifications. Keeping in mind the advice of my friends I went to different shops with my parents and searched for different smartphones which provides good specifications at an affordable price. After checking different deals, I was surprised that finally I found a phone that was in my budget and had the specifications which I was looking for. Before buying, my friends shared passionately their positive experiences with different smartphone brands. Although I was happy with my current brand, I was persuaded by their enthusiasm and decided to buy a new one. It
was a mixed experience for me, the new smartphone had impressive features but I also faced challenges while switching to a different operating system. I wasn’t surprised by the outcomes as my friends had already given strong influence. According to the situation, my parents were advising me to chose a phone that didn’t cost me too much and was practical for everyday use. They were likely concerned about the budget and want me to make a responsible financial decision. On the other hand, my friends were really into coolest and latest smartphone. They had great experience with their high-spec devices they wanted me to join their excitement. INFLUENCE This scenario was a combination of conformity and persuasion. My friends used persuasive tactics. They influenced me by telling me how fantastic the brand is by focusing on its superior features. It was challenging for me to make a decision that it should be affordable as well as had all the features my friends are insisting. All I wanted was to share a common experience with my friends and wanted to become a part of their excitement. Moreover, I believed that if my friends are having positive experience with this brand, choosing the same one will lead to a better overall experience for me. So, the difficulty was aligning with my friends as well as parents and make a decision based on what I genuinely think will enhance my smartphone experience. My family stressed the importance of affordability and practicality as well as encouraging responsible spending. This was quite confusing as I wanted to buy a smartphone so that I can share my experience with my friends and enjoy their company but I also needed to consider the budget set by my parents.
ACTIONS IN THE FUTURE If I faced with similar situation in future, I would take a thoughtful approach by carefully considering my own needs and preferences. I would conduct independent research by taking information from various sources and make an informed decision. This may include reading product reviews, analyze different opinions and ensuring that whatever I am going to buy align with my usage pattern. All in all, I would try to resist external influence and make decision that suits my requirements. My intentions would be to prioritize my personal needs by making sure that the smartphone I chose must meet my practical criteria. This approach reflects a level of self-awareness and a commitment to making choices that genuinely suit my preferences and lifestyle. Even I have to chose anything in future, I will do deep research on that thing and try to find out all the pros and cons of buying that thing. This will definitely give me an idea whether I am making right decision or not. CONCLUSION For a friend encountering similar situation, I would suggest him to do independent research. I would encourage him to gather information on their own so that he can make a better decision based on his needs and preferences. This process allows him to critically evaluated the choices presented in front of him. The main purpose of this is to ensure that external influences don't overshadows his own values and desires. After reading the details, reading reviews, and considering various perspective, my friend can gain a clearer understanding of what aligns with their lifestyle and priorities. This approach not only enhances the confidence for making a choice that truly suits the requirements but also foster a sense of autonomy and confidence in

decision making. It would also encourage him to take charge of his choices, considering external input but ultimately prioritizing what matters most to him. I would also encourage him to learn saying no to anyone if somebody will be influencing him in negative manner. At last, I would say that this incident provided me an idea about choosing an appropriate gadget. I always listen to my friends and family members which purchasing but during final decision, I do a lot of research and then buy anything. This strategy is always helpful for me and I always suggest this to my friends as well. REFERENCE https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/textbooks/introduction-to-psychology
