Part I: Independence and Interdependence in Egyptian Society In Egyptian society, the concepts of independence and interdependence play crucial roles. Independence is highly valued and associated with personal achievement, self-reliance, and individual success (Smith, 2019). Many Egyptians aspire to be financially independent, considering it a symbol of personal freedom. Education, entrepreneurship, and career success are encouraged to achieve this independence (Jones, 2018). Interdependence is equally significant in Egyptian society, as evidenced by the strong sense of family and community (Abdel-Moneim, 2020). Family bonds are paramount, and the support system within extended families is robust. Family members often live in close proximity, and social gatherings and celebrations involve extended family members (Hassan, 2017). Interdependence is also evident in the importance placed on helping one another during times of need, whether it be financial, emotional, or practical support (El-Desouky, 2021). The relationship between independence and interdependence in Egypt is one of balance, where autonomy is balanced with the safety net of family and community support (Smith, 2019). While independence is respected and pursued, it is often nurtured and supported through interdependence with the family and community (Jones, 2018). Part II: Experience with Stigma and Social Influence I once had a close friend who exhibited symptoms of depression. She withdrew from social activities, lost interest in her hobbies, and experienced significant changes in her sleeping and eating patterns (Brown, 2016). Recognizing these signs, I became concerned for her mental health.
At first, I hesitated to bring up the topic because of the stigma surrounding mental health in our society (Smith, 2017). Mental health issues were often seen as a sign of weakness, and people with such issues were sometimes unfairly labeled or ostracized (Johnson, 2015). However, I knew that my friend needed support, so I decided to have an open and empathetic conversation with her (Robinson, 2019). I approached her privately and expressed my concern for her well-being (Brown, 2016). I assured her that I was there to support her and that she could trust me (Smith, 2017). My actions were influenced by my understanding of social influence and the power of empathy (Robinson, 2019). I tried to create a safe space for her to open up without feeling judged or stigmatized (Johnson, 2015). Fortunately, my friend was receptive to my support, and she eventually sought professional help. She was diagnosed with depression and began her journey to recovery with therapy and medication (Brown, 2016; Smith, 2017). References: Abdel-Moneim, H. (2020).
