DiscussionPaper3 2 Case Introduction Laura is 47 years old, who is referred for depression treatment by her doctor. Due to her depression, she had never felt satisfaction with her life, and that is why she also did not want to have children. Her childhood experience also worked the worst due to her mother’s physical and psychological abuse to her, and to her siblings. Now, for 8 months, Laura has been experiencing severe depression due to menopause, because she now cannot have children in her life. However, she also takes care of 86-year-old mother, who had always been rude to her during childhood. Now, this report aims to present the Interventional social strategy for Laura’s case to help her dealing with her depression and come back to normal life again. Intervention Models to support Laura’s case Several intervention models [ CITATION AGo11 \l 1033 ] have been introduced in the field of psychology to curb the challenges associated with mental distressed situation or cognitive challenges. However, I believe, in the case of Laura, cognitive- behavioral intervention model will work the best. This is because Laura has been experiencing cognitive challenges due to unhealthy relationship with her mother and witnessing the worst relationship between her parents. Thus, cognitive-behavioral model will be helpful to firstly evaluate what cognitive challenges are associated with Laura’s depression, and how that affect her behavior.
DiscussionPaper3 3 Creator(s) of theory and circumstances Under CBT model, the Narrative Therapy can work highly effective to deal with Laura’s case. Narrative Therapy was developed in mid 1980s by David Epston and Michael White[ CITATION Eps90 \l 1033 ]. The best thing about the theory is that it does not focus on mental illness or the psychological solutions because most of the people do not feel comfortable in calling them as psychologically disturb. Thus, the theory focused on the cultural ethics to enhance social power to the people and assist them to deal with their challenges and strengthen their relationship with others. Now, in the case of Laura, the major challenge is her unhealthy relationship with mother and its impact on her psychological health. Another challenge to Laura is her feelings of never being able to become mother due to which she is feeling sad and empty and therefore experiencing severe stress in last 8 months. Now, the Narrative theory can be helpful with its features to discuss triggering issue to the Laura, and evaluate how the relationship between mother and daughter, and between Laura and society can be improved to enhance her satisfaction level to life. Key features of intervention model and theory Narrative Therapy basically focus on the storyline of the client to better understand what is the issue and how it is affecting one’s life. Thus, the main features of the Narrative Therapy are; 1- Plot 2- Characters 3- Timeline

DiscussionPaper3 4 With these features, the Narrative Therapy actually aims to let the client see more realities by offering him/her more choices and strengthen the self- empowerment[ CITATION AGo11 \l 1033 ]. Now, when it comes to the Plot, the Laura’s case is based on her life with old sick mother, un-married life, no children, menopause effects, and lack of satisfaction to life. The characters of her story are mother, father, and siblings. Finally, timeline of Laura’s case started from her childhood till now when Laura is 47 years old. Now, when considering the case step-by-step, as social worker the narrative therapy can be extremely helpful to deal with Laura. Firstly, she needs to understand the realities of her life to better evaluate why was her mother so rude with her children and what has she experienced in her life. This can be done by arranging sitting sessions with Laura and narrate the story of her life[ CITATION Sau231 \l 1033 ], and let her speak whatever she has been experiencing since her childhood and what does she think of her mother and life now. In this way, the trigger event can be known, which is actual reason of the stress. During the narration, Laura needs to realize that her mother had some professional goals as nurse or practitioner, but Laura’s father bound her to be at home and take care of children. This some how killed her own dreams, whereas she experienced domestic violence in terms of forced decisions. This left worst impact on her psychological and mental health due to which she found children as the weakest target and so she used to punish Laura and her siblings and keeping her in dark and cold room. In actual, no one was there to understand her frustration and mental issues, whereas she was also suffering form the worst phase of her life.
DiscussionPaper3 5 Instead of considering her a cruel mother, no one appreciated her for being sacrificing mother who never left her children a lone to opt her professional life. Thus, Laura needs to realize the sacrifices that were made by her mother for her and siblings. In this way, Laura can realize that how deeply her mother was hurt and she always wanted some help, and still now she wants a strong bond with someone to get healed. Thus, Laura can give emotional support to her mother and can understand her situation. This will not only strengthen their relationship, but also will help Laura to reduce her stress level. Also, as Laura is now in the time phase of life where menopause started and she spent her whole life without children because she was afraid to be a mom like her mother, so now she regrets her decisions. The narrative therapy can be helpful to narrate different stories of women who cannot be a mother naturally due to some health issues, and so they decide to either adapt a child or buying their favorite pet, like cat or dog. This can help Laura to fill the guilt of waiting her life and fear of never being able to be mother. Another option is consultation to the gynecologist to discuss any alternate option, if available, which might also help her to deal with this issue in more friendly way. Thus, the therapy will help Laura to see at things from different perspectives and strengthen her bond with mother or to enjoy her life like a normal person with positive attitude. This will reduce her stress and also will increase her confidence.
DiscussionPaper3 6 Example of how model will work to the case In Laura’s case, the narrative theory will focus on the story discussion to let Laura realize everything form her mother’s perspective. However, when it comes to CBT model[ CITATION Oak17 \l 1033 ], it actually works on emotions and cognitive behavior of the client and thus following steps will be followed in this case; 1- Feelings: Firstly, it is crucial to work on Laura’s feelings to let her realize that her life is full of happiness and love if she will understand things from her mother’s perspective, and will enjoy the life. She need to just overcome over the thoughts and feelings which she experienced in childhood. 2- Behavior: recalling things back may also help Laura to explore the things deeper and experience a new emotion of sympathy for her mother[ CITATION Car14 \l 1033 ]. DiscussionPaper3 7 might help the Laura to see things from her mother’s perspective and realize how hard it was for her to be at home without her will and be in harsh relationship for the sake of children[ CITATION Päi20 \l 1033 ]. 3- Thought: Thus, Laura can be encouraged to think and understand about her mother’s situation and develop healthy relationship with her. Also, Laura needs to understand the menopause is not the end; rather she can either adapt a child or a pet to enjoy her life and live it to the fullest. Strengths and limitation of model The major barrier to the model is that being a social worker it is hard to understand psychological connections associated with CBT model. However, the best thing is that narrative theory under CBT model proves to be highly helpful for me, as social worker, to shed light on the case, understand it in better way, and help Laura to strengthen her relationship with mother. Most importantly, narrative theory is the easiest and most effective way of developing healthy and friendly relationship with client and derive her mind to the situation where she/he is actually distracted. In Laura’s case, she got distracted in her childhood by considering her mother as cruel woman, and never could see things from other perspective. Now, through narrative theory, she can better understand things form her mother’s end to realize how her mother’s mental health was the reason of being cruel woman, especially when there was no one to help.
