Intergenerational/Historic Trauma Intergenerational trauma is passed down from trauma survivors to their descendants. To survive, individuals learn to adapt, which sends them into trauma response. “When your brain learns the adaptive behavior necessary to keep yourself and your family safe/alive, these adaptations may be passed on to future generations and can be challenging to un-learn” (Marschall, 2022, p.1). Understanding intergenerational/historical trauma is essential because it provides a basis for the underlying mental stress that can sometimes manifest into psychological disorders and drug and alcohol addiction (Jones-Smith, 2019). Clients who experience traumas such as those mentioned above can cause them to mistrust counselors who are trying to help. Counselors who understand trauma will recognize the symptoms during sessions, including reactions, patterns, behavior changes, intense emotions, and withdrawal, and they will gradually approach the issue. These stress responses can also manifest as medical issues such as a stroke, heart attack, etc. Counselors who understand trauma will recognize the symptoms and will use a trauma-informed approach to help their clients cope with the symptoms, understand the trauma, and equip their clients with the tools to manage their body’s physiological response and help change deeply rooted patterns so that they can heal (Marschall, 2022).
