2 Effect of Simile Dementia Treatment on Brain Functioning Simile dementia is a type of condition also known as semantic variant primary progressive aphasia, which is characterized by progressive loss of memory, language impairment, and changes in behavioral activities (Suarez et al., 2021). Several treatments related to this condition aim to slow down the progression of this disease, manage its symptoms, and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by the condition. This treatment may positively affect brain functioning even though they do not cure or reverse the underlying brain changes. One of the treatments that can impact the brain's functioning of an individual with this condition is the medication they undertake. Though the specific medication for this condition is not known, some medications used to treat other forms of dementia, such as depression, are usually prescribed. This medication usually targets symptoms like depression, anxiety, and problems sleeping, which can often lead to simile dementia. Preventing this symptom enhances benefits on brain functioning and the overall well-being of an individual. Another treatment that has an impact on the brain is the speech and language treatment. This type of therapy has a positive effect on the individual with simile dementia as it explicitly targets language impairment. The therapist usually works with these individuals to improve communication skills, maintain language abilities, and develop alternative communication strategies. This therapy stimulates the language centers in the brain, potentially slowing down the rate of decline. Engaging in cognitive activities is another treatment for simile dementia that usually impacts the brain and helps improve the brain's functioning (Suarez et al., 2021). It usually focuses on memory, attention, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. This activity
3 helps stimulate neural connections in the brain and compensate the areas affected by the disease, thus improving the functioning. In conclusion, though the treatment of simile dementia cannot reverse the underlying brain changes, it usually improves the functioning of the brain and symptoms and slows down the progression of the disease. Medications and therapies such as speech and language therapy and cognitive training are crucial in achieving these outcomes.
