Running head: STUDENT MOTIVATION AND ENGAGEMENT 1 Student Motivation and Engagement Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation
STUDENT MOTIVATION AND ENGAGEMENT 2 Student Motivation and Engagement Most teachers find it challenging to adjust the educational environment and provide accommodations for students with visual processing disorders or audio processing disorders. These conditions affect the student's ability to communicate and interpret things during learning. Auditory processing disorder affects the individual's ability to decode what they hear, while visual processing disorder affects the ability of a person to interpret what they see (Koller, 2012). Some common symptoms include difficulty in speech, inability to follow simple instructions, easily distracted and an extremely low concentration span, and stammering. There are various strategies that a teacher can use to accommodate the students suffering from these disorders, especially during mathematics instruction. For students with an auditory processing disorder, schools need to provide them with Personal Listening Devices. For instance, the wireless microphone can help transmit the teacher's voice clearly to the student wearing a pair of headsets. These headsets also help in preventing background noises that may distract the students. Besides, classrooms can be fitted with soundproof walls to prevent noise from outside (Schiefele, 2017). Students with visual processing disorder can also be engaged and motivated in various ways. Teachers can use different colors to help them see and read well, for example, using bright-colored liquid chalk pens to write instructions. Further, the classroom can encompass floor path illumination to prevent them from bumping into desks and shelves. Other than using contexts that are familiar to the student, teachers can read the instructions for the student and reduce the class time in line with their concentration span (Koller, 2012). Although these strategies will not permanently cure the disorder, they can enable teachers to increase student motivation and engagement; therefore, helping the students with visual processing disorders or audio processing disorders to learn comfortably.
