2 1. Do you believe that television viewing is a cause of early smoking initiation? Why or why not? What evidence in addition to what is presented in the article and the module would you need to definitively be convinced that television watching is a cause of smoking initiation? I believe TV watching, in my opinion, greatly contribute to early smoking initiation. The article suggests that prolonged television viewing among the young generation is correlated with early smoking initiation, although there is no clear evidence to back up this assertion. Since the article claims that the NLSY only looked at the amount of television viewed, scholars should investigate the sort of television being watched in order to reinforce the link. Additionally, in order to uncover potential confounding variables, analysts might examine other media material being seen or other influencing factors like peer pressure. . 2. Do you think the epidemiologic evidence is conclusive enough to merit a public health intervention? What would be the general rules to devise a public health intervention? Because the rates of smoking differ significantly depending on the quantity of television seen, epidemiologic evidence is strong enough to merit a public health intervention. Public health interventions have to be population-specific, include a set of objectives, and suggest substitute behaviors for the unhealthy ones. A public health intervention for the study in the article would involve having 10- to 15-year-olds engage in activities like an after-school program or library programs with outdoor activities to cut down on their television viewing time. By encouraging study and exercise instead of watching television, these options may also help the general populace.
3 3. Think of two examples of exposure/ outcome relationships that you believe are causal, and describe why you believe that the relationship is a causal one. What points of evidence were necessary in your evaluation of a causal relationship? One example of a causal relationship is car accidents and distracted driving. There is proof to back up the idea that engaging in distracted activities while driving, such as texting and chatting on the phone, raises the possibility of a collision. Pregnancy and unprotected sex are another instance of a causal relationship. There is proof to back up the idea that not using birth control or other preventative measures during sex, such as using a condom, increases the risk of becoming pregnant.
