Report
The acts of violent extremism have become regular in the past decade, and little research has managed to analyze the interplay between individuals carrying out these acts and those experiencing these acts. The Summit Against Violent Extremism (SAVE) offered an opportunity to explore the experiences of former violent extremists and victims of terrorist acts. The purpose of this article was to take the reader through the discussion s of three senior psychologists attending SAVE to offer support to all involved. The psychologists outlined self- identity, social development, family and peer groups as critical in the developing of the extremist views and the de-radicalization of such views. The summit provided terrorist survivors an opportunity to express their anger positively and the setting could be improved for future summits. I believe the summit is an excellent idea as a means used to develop an understanding of the part takers of violent acts. The psychologist’s presence at the summit was to attempt to support survivors and efforts in overcoming communication barriers. The psychologists provide practical suggestions for future de-radicalization of people in extremist groups. Gargan, Ian, Fiona, K. Aherne, Cian, Fitzgerald, Noelle, McNicholas, J. (2015).
