Week 7 assignment – Mid-semester capstone The purpose of this assignment is to bring together your thinking about what career you are thinking about right now following the work so far in class. Please put some time into your reflection. We will also touch on this during our coaching session. 1) Before class started, what career path were you considering? Please provide a short paragraph or more for EACH of the following: a. Describe the career, and what path you thought you would need to take (grad school, find work right out of school, what skills would you need to develop). I was contemplating becoming a mental health counselor. The path I thought I would need to take included pursuing a master's degree in counseling or a related field. I believed that this path would require obtaining a counseling license, which typically involves completing a master's program, gaining practical experience through internships or supervised practice, and passing relevant licensing exams. Skills I thought I would need to develop included active listening, empathy, communication, and a strong foundation in psychology and counseling theories. b. Reflect on WHY you thought you might go this way. Was it due to something you heard from a friend or relative, something on TV, something you learned in school? Various factors influenced my interest in this career path. One of the primary influences was my desire to positively impact people's lives by helping them navigate challenging mental and emotional issues. Additionally, I had conversations with friends and family members who had positive experiences with mental health professionals, which inspired me to explore this field further. Furthermore, I was exposed to psychology courses during my undergraduate studies, which sparked my interest in the human mind and behavior. c. What were you doing BEFORE THIS CLASS to prepare for this pathway? Before taking this class, I prepared for this pathway by researching different master's programs in counseling and mental health. I was also looking into the requirements for licensing in my state, which helped me understand the steps involved in becoming a licensed mental health counselor. Additionally, I started volunteering at a local crisis hotline to
gain practical experience supporting individuals dealing with mental health issues and crises. 2) After a few weeks looking at career paths in this class, what career path are you considering NOW? Please provide a short paragraph or more for EACH of the following: a. Describe the career, and what path you think you would need to take (grad school, find work right out of school, what skills would you need to develop) to get there OR if the career is the same, what new information have your learned about the path you need to take to get there. A BCBA specializes in assessing and providing behavior intervention services to individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, and other behavioral challenges. The path to becoming a BCBA involves pursuing a master's degree in applied behavior analysis or a related field, followed by gaining practical experience through supervised ABA work and passing the BCBA certification exam. Skills crucial for this career include behavior assessment, intervention design, data analysis, and effective communication. b. Reflect on WHY you have chosen a new path OR reflect on why you are sticking with the same one. I chose this new career path because I became increasingly interested in ABA during the course. Learning about the positive impact that behavior analysts can have on individuals with various needs, especially those with autism, motivated me to explore this career further. Additionally, the strong emphasis on evidence-based practices and data-driven decision-making in ABA aligns with my analytical and problem-solving strengths, making it a compelling choice. c. What do you need to do 1) this semester and 2) after this semester to get ready for this career? List options in school, extra work, or training you think you might need. To prepare for this career, I must take specific steps this semester and beyond. This semester, I plan to focus on my coursework and excel in relevant psychology and behavior analysis courses. I will also continue volunteering or seeking part-time employment opportunities in settings that provide exposure to ABA practices. After this semester, I will need to research and apply to master's programs in applied behavior analysis, ensuring they are accredited by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). During graduate school, I will work towards accumulating the supervised experience hours required for BCBA certification. Additionally, I
will prepare for the BCBA certification exam by studying the relevant content and guidelines provided by the BACB. 3) Please describe your level of competence with your chosen path. a. What is the source of this confidence (something you read, information you received from someone else, etc.) and why is that a good source? I am moderately confident in my chosen path as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). My confidence primarily stems from the extensive research and learning I've undertaken during this class. I have gathered information from reputable sources, including academic materials, articles, and online resources related to ABA and BCBA certification. Moreover, the guidance my instructor provided and the insights my peers shared have been instrumental in building my confidence. This multifaceted approach to gathering information ensures I have a well-rounded understanding of the career path. b. If you are not confident, what do you think you need to do next to become more confident with your choice? What information source could you explore? While I have a moderate confidence level, there's always room for improvement. I plan to explore additional resources such as academic journals, books, and scholarly articles focused on ABA to become more confident in my choice. I will also seek out individuals currently working as BCBAs or pursuing a similar career path to gain practical insights and firsthand experiences. Engaging in networking events, workshops, or webinars related to ABA can further enhance my understanding and confidence in this chosen career.
