Renden Dye Child 210 11/4/2023 W10 Assignment: Chapter 11-12 Advice to Parents Chapter 11: Letter 3 My son has two children in his class that have obvious learning disabilities. They always need extra help, take more time to learn, and disrupt the class. I don’t mean to be rude, but why don’t they put them in a special education classroom? Wouldn’t that be better for everyone? I know that when I was a child, that’s what they did. Has the law or school policy changed? Do you have any suggestions? No, the law or school has not changed. There are several studies out there that when we add these disabled children into the mainstream classroom it will improve their academic achievement. There are other benefits like boosting self-esteem and improving their social skills. The way I would look at it is imagine if you were a kid in school and you had a small learning disability how you feel if you were put into a “Special classroom” For me I would feel horrible. Tell your boy to be patient with them and learn to love them that way they feel like they are a part of the class. One quote I read from my textbook that I liked that I think explains this situation is “Some research supports the strategy of special education for children with exceptional music, math, or athletic gifts. Their brain structures develop in ways to support their talents (Moreno et al., 2015)” Chapter 11: Letter 5 My son has been diagnosed with a pervasive developmental disorder. The doctor has recommended additional testing, but I’m afraid he’ll be labeled and treated differently if we do the testing. He does have some problems with social skills and doesn’t communicate well with others, but he also seems very gifted in other areas. Can his condition improve? What causes such disorders? Is there a treatment? I understand your concern my brother had horrible ADHD when he was in elementary school and my parents had the same worry. But I can promise you they will not label him differently. The school wants to have kids with disabilities as part of the mainstream system. There is a great quote from an
amazing textbook I read it states “Children who are bright, talented, and/or creative — all the same age but each with special abilities — are taught as a group in their own separate class. Ideally, such children are neither bored nor lonely; each is challenged and appreciated by classmates and teachers.” I like this quote because it shows you that nobody will think differently of your kid and you are right, he has so many special gifts. Right now, there is no known cure for PDD but the good news there are medications out there that will help with behavior problems. Along with therapy should be specialized. Chapter 12: Letter 1 My seven-year-old son’s schoolteacher referred to him as a concrete operational thinker. What does that mean? She mentioned something about logical concepts. Should I be concerned? He seems perfectly normal to me. Great question! Concept operational thinking is “characterized by logical operations, such as conservation, reversibility or classification, allowing logical reasoning.” Logical concepts are a broad introduction to the principles of correct reasoning. I would not be worried like any child it takes time and lots of work. One example in my textbook that I think would help you out is “(at the concrete operational stage) enjoys making her brother laugh, and their mother understands more abstract ideas — such as family bonding.” This is a great learning stage so you should not be worried about anything! If anything, you should be happy this stage is a fun stage to be in as a parent. Chapter 12: Letter 3 What’s wrong with our educational system? I understand that we rate lower on many standardized tests than other industrialized countries. Do we need to spend more money on education? Could our approach to teaching be improved? Does the problem start with how we teach basic reading and math skills? Are our classes too big? What is the problem with our educational system, and what recommendations would you make to improve it? A lot of it comes from the parents. The education system of course still could use some work but this upcoming generation is distracted by phones and other stuff. The logical answer would be let’s spend more for children but there are many children out there that simply cannot afford to pay more. One of the main problems that I think children could is if they have a good teacher or not one quote that I found in my textbook was “Another aspect of
the hidden curriculum is who the teachers are. If their gender, ethnicity, or economic background is unlike that of their students, children may conclude that education is irrelevant to them.” Getting the right teacher can eliminate many of these problems and fix our educational system. How we get better teachers is still something that I scratch my head on. Whether that is they get paid more? Or they have to have high education. Many factors could be in place to help schools and our kids. References Berger, K. S. (2018). The developing person through childhood . Worth Publishers. Pg. 307 teaching the gifted and talented.
