2 Practice Toolbox: Child Intervention While obtaining my degree in social work, I always had an interest in working with children. Children have a sense of innocence and a playful spirit that I admire watching. When working with children, there are many interventions that a social worker could utilize. One therapy that is very intriguing to me is play therapy. Play Therapy is used to help young children process their emotions and feelings in a safe, play-based environment where the social worker observes and interacts alongside them (Walden University, LLC, 2022). Play-based therapy is an excellent tool for children because children learn best through play. For example, when learning how to interact with others, learning the alphabet, or even numbers, teachers, parents, or caregivers often demonstrate those activities to children through song and play. Play therapy helps children in many ways. It targets children ages 3 to 11 who have experienced social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Still, play therapy has also been helpful for adults, for example, role-playing (Play Therapy, 2024). Play therapy is so beneficial to young children because it allows the child free range to play and express their thoughts and feelings, allowing the social worker to learn more about their true feelings, behaviors, and how to solve the problems presented. Play therapy helps with a range of issues, such as children who experience bullying, sadness, anxiousness, struggling with chronic illness, social skills, dealing with family problems, such as divorce or death of a family member, facing severe medical procedures, and many more. According to psychology today, play therapy is directed by the child, unlike many other forms of treatment. Like other therapies and interventions, play therapy has many benefits but comes with challenges or limitations. Play therapy is not for every child (Madsen, 2020). There may be some incidents where playing is not of the child's interest, and trying to utilize play therapy may not be
3 as conducive to the treatment. Play therapy is also a long, drawn-out process (Madsen, 2020). “It usually occurs in weekly sessions for an average of 20 sessions lasting 30 to 45 minutes each” (Play Therapy, 2024). Another challenge is that someone who uses play therapy must have extensive training. “It is advisable to seek a therapist who has not just extensive training but experience using play therapy to treat children presenting with concerns similar to yours” (Play Therapy, 2024).
