I am appreciative of the U.S. Department of State's resources, which are detailed on their official website and which highlight the significance of these issues and the country's dedication to advancing them internationally. The issue of voter suppression, in my opinion, is a serious one that requires our immediate attention. The American Yawp (Locke and Wright, 2019), chapter "The Unraveling," offers a thorough examination of the problems and constraints that have affected American democracy over time. It emphasizes how the United States struggled with a number of difficulties in the late 20th and early 21st centuries that threatened to erode its democratic principles. A crucial period in American history, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, opposed racial injustice and segregation. A significant piece of legislation, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, sought to end racial discrimination in voting. The democratic ideals of our country continued to be tested despite these notable advancements, including voter suppression, gerrymandering, and escalating divisiveness. I definitely believe that this legal approach is superior to other solutions since it fully tackles the problem, preserves democratic ideals, and ensures that all individuals have equal access to the voting booth. We can safeguard the rights of vulnerable communities and rebuild faith in our democratic system by reinstating and enhancing federal oversight of states with a history of discrimination in the voting process. The American Yawp chapter emphasizes how the degradation of voting rights and the credibility of our elections is not a recent problem but rather a component of a larger historical context. It serves as a reminder that despite ongoing difficulties and threats, American democracy has proven resilient because to the efforts of activists and citizens who have fought for their rights.
