M4 Written Assignment: Policy and Politics
HUSV-3333-01
Community Organizing
11/28/23
Words:1,700
There is no coincidence that policy, politics and power all start with the letter P.
The
combination of these three words is what can push and propel a community project to its full
potential.
There are regime
policies at the federal, state and local levels that have an impact on
the target initiative of the Brooklyn Legacy project.
There can be negative and/or positive
impacts.
Its the job of the community organizing leaders to be tactful and diplomatic when
operating under these structures.
The social sectors of my target initiative and the sectorial
policies that may affect it all governmental levels include the homelessness initiative, the “A Tree
grows in Brooklyn” initiative and the “Bridging the gap between police and community
initiative.
The homelessness initiative is a policy initiative aimed at the community group of
homeless shelters and the homeless people in this community under the BLP.
The goal of this
initiative is to provide healthcare and improve their outcomes overall.
The BLP will collaborate
with the homeless shelters under the Affordable Care Act and to reduce the readmission rates of
the homeless.
This policy initiative will also work with social workers from the local community
and Medicare and Medicaid to guarantee that hospitals with high readmission rates receive
reduced reimbursements (Koh, 2020). Homeless people get readmitted a lot because of their
unfortunate
li
fe circumstances, and this legislation is crucial in addressing their special needs and
guaranteeing effective healthcare delivery.
The next initiative is one of sustainability.
The “A
Tree grows in Brooklyn initiative its to provide proper proper solutions to various problems the
community is facing by establishing a network which is supportive where the community can be
involved and assist each other through a sustainable community tree initiative. Notably, we are
looking for assistance from a myriad of institutions for finances, information, implementation
and overall networking.
This initiative also calls for a networking facility center where the
community can reach out for information, help, a place where vendors and business owners,
people from the community can learn from each other and maybe help each other long term in
various ventures.
Lastly, end goal is the erection of a tree on the middle block of Park place
between New York avenue and Brooklyn ave where my private school is that I went to growing
up.
This BLP project will provide opportunities under the “A Tree grows in Brooklyn initiative
by increasing awareness on the community is run, by strengthening the relationship with the
diverse members of the community and organization in the neighborhood.
Lastly, the “Bridging
the gap between the community and police initiative will be demonstrated by creating police-
community partnerships to create trust and collaboration between police and the community.
This last initiative calls for transparent policing, the use of technological advancements like GPS
technologies, fostering partnerships with law enforcement organizations like ATF, FBI,
metropolitan transit police, etc.
There will also be a park and recreation watch and forming
alliances with the Boys and Girls club on Fulton street and Hebron SDA church and school
where citizens and and community leaders can hon forces by sending a positive message and
building street lights to foster a safe community
.
There numerous demands and supports for change that will impact the Brooklyn Legacy
project.
It ranges from support from the Nursing home on St. Marks street, the seventh-day
adventist organization of Hebron School and church.
There are numerous amount of human and
social service professionals in the actual community that will support us with their time and
funds.
The charities of AHRC and homeless shelters will provide their time, energy and charities
to help sponsor some of endeavors like soup kitchens given on the corner of Bedford Ave and
Atlantic Ave and local council member that help push our initiative under the Affordable Care
Act
.
Unfortunately, there are groups, forces and or even some policies that may oppose the BLP
project.
Firstly, there will always be a sense of mistrust and negativity from the community in
the initial stages of community organizing.
Secondly, there are many people in the local
communities who will difficulty engaging in political activities because they are just not
interested and can result in an imbalance of participation and power
.
There are a plethora of ways I will try increase the demands and supports for the BLP project
by expressing more and more the problems caused by inequality in our communities and looking
for support for legislation and activities that assist marginalized groups, which extremely helps
when justice is the end goal.
As a community organizer of the BLP, I will increase demands and
supports by starting campaigns to secure funding through the street light project, secure funding
local public policy councils, working on passing laws that help the environment, decrease

pollutions and start campaigns to secure affordable housing for low-income residents and quality
access to education and healthcare.
I truly believe by mobilizing and educating the community,
lobbying elected officials, building coalitions through partnerships with the police, BLP can
make real difference in the lives of people who live in the Crown Heights area
.
The key stakeholders for my BLP project and strategies that will be needed to gain their
continued support are the Brooklyn Hospital downtown Brooklyn, LIU (Brooklyn Campus),
Borough Recreation Center on St. John’s Place, Crown Heights city council, Crown Heights
Public Health Partnership, Clara Barton High School on Classon Avenue via the American Red
Cross, Brooklyn Museum
.
There are gatekeepers that will be identified in this paper that can open doors and provide
influence for the passing of the BLP.
These gatekeepers will open doors for this project to get us
the emotional and financial support we need to be successful.
Being a gatekeeper basically
means someone or a group that have influence or control over youth access to resources.
The
gatekeeper for BLP are the daily news, fox news as the information sources and the community
gatekeepers is someone that will keep the peace act as a liaison.
We have Rabbi Lubowitz from
temple on Kingston Ave, Pastor Joseph from the Hebron Seventh-day adventist and church and
our community leader Sharon who owns stores on Kingston avenue and who is a social worker
as well. These 3 gatekeepers are our elected leaders that will use their influence on the cultural
and political environment needed to get us to where we need to get to in our community as a
whole
.
There will be a community component or and political strong hold that will enable the BLP
to launch.
At the time, there will be some impediments in our way and we need to be able to be
well equipped to combat that when the appropriate time comes.
For instance, we anticipate it
being difficult to work with our in initiative on bridging the gap between police and the
community by the police already resisting the involvement of other agencies to help reduce and
carefully examine the problems in the neighborhood.
The police are also ready resisting the
decentralizing of authority of the neighborhood which might be problematic moving forward.
We will continue to work with 71st and 77th precinct
on way on exploring appropriate problem
solving remedies to excessive police presence in our community and over-criminalization in our
community
.
There are various outputs of the process for the success of the BLP.
Theres an ideal outcome,
the community is galvanized and empowered for change.
The next steps after this outcome will
be community mobilization on campaigns for cleaner streets, sitting in town hall meetings,
raising funds for the community to conduct business meetings at the local level in Crown heights
and that all diverse communities still together at one table as one group to define and better our
realities together
.
There are compromise outcomes like the many Jew buildings not backing down on the prices
of rent and relocation alternatives of the buildings.
The next steps after this outcome will be will
be to come together and respect autonomy and cultural sensitivity and come to a flexible,
collective decision on how to settle this issue.
There are undesirable outcomes are total
resistance.
The next steps after this outcome will be to sell the idea of strong community
organizing efforts and building social capital.
I would have to work harder to resource the
movement and sell the community idea with the help of my gatekeepers
.
Every project needs a feedback process that can allow us to measure and assess our project as
its being implemented and planned.
The ways I will maintain support is to be in constant
communication with the group.
What I learned not to do is to communicate well and trust people
slowly especially when there’s a team goal.
The way that I will maintain support is to always
stay open-minded and always have a service mentality.
Great leaders and great teams are not
only great because of their accolades and achievements but because of their ability to serve and
to be selfless in supporting the BLP
.
There are many social values that may affect the project.
The BLP will be developed in
probably one of the most diverse neighborhoods in New York City.
With that diversity comes
many point of views and perspectives.
A likely view of the on the underlying issue of is to
respect all cultures and all differences.
I truly believe that this enormous diversity can be more
of a positive than negative because of the vast amounts of different culture and social values.
We
can use this diversity to our advantage and create some awesome initiatives by working together
working on the tree project.
This type of networking can be more positive in the long-term
.
When a new regime comes in and takes over the city and local districts there will be different
rules and regulations to follow.
Thus any regime changes or alterations in policy can affect BLP
initiatives.
Fro example with our current Mayor now, Mayor Eric Adams who’s has just

proposed a new directive targeting people with perceived mental illness for removal off the
streets and mandatory hospitalization. This new regime policy is the opposite my BLP and its
initiative which is to provide shelter and reduce repeat hospitalizations of the homeless.
Moreover, my policing and community partnerships initiative will be compromised as Mayor
Adams initiative results in further criminalization and police violence against this unhoused
population
