Discussion Forum Unit-1
by Ryan Knight (Instructor) - Friday, 16 June 2023, 9:46 AM
Globalization is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that encompasses various interconnected aspects of econom
political and cultural dimensions (The Counsel on Foreign Relations, 2021). Among several theories presented to explain
how globalization developed, I find the World-System Theory and the World Culture Theory particularly compelling,
albeit for different reasons.

Discussion Forum Unit-1
The World-System Theory which I agree with, posits that the world economy is divided into a hierarchy of core, semi-
peripheral, and peripheral nations (Lechner, 2001). Core nations dominate the global economic system by exploiting
resources and labor in less developed peripheral countries while semi-peripheral nations occupy an intermediate positi
between the other two. This theory accurately depicts the unequal distribution of wealth and power in today's globalize
world where some countries benefit more from globalization than others (Lechner, 2001). It highlights the inherent
structural inequalities that emerge from the process of globalization and helps us understand the disparities we observ
in contemporary society.
On the other hand, the World Culture Theory which I disagree with, argues that globalization has led to the emergence
a global culture characterized by shared norms, values, and institutions (Lechner, 2001). While it is true that globalizatio
has facilitated the spread of ideas, products, and cultural practices across the globe, I believe that the notion of a singu
world culture is overly simplistic. This theory fails to account for the persistence of local and regional cultures and the
complexity of cultural exchanges that take place in a globalized world (Köchler, 2018). Instead of a homogenized globa
culture, we observe a dynamic interplay of different cultural influences, often resulting in hybrid forms and localized
adaptations.
In conclusion, the World-System Theory resonates with me more because it acknowledges the power dynamics and
inequalities that are inherent to globalization. While the World Culture Theory offers an interesting perspective on the
cultural aspects of globalization; I find it lacking in nuance, as it oversimplifies the rich diversity and complexity of cultu
exchanges in the global era.

Great discussion, Isaiah. Your first sentence sets the tone for the course: "Globalization is a complex and multifaceted
phenomenon that encompasses various interconnected aspects of economic, political and cultural dimensions."
As we dive into our studies of globalization, it's really important that we recognize this up front: Globalization is
complex, multifaceted, and can be studied and understood in a whole variety of different ways.

Considering the strengths and weaknesses of both the World System Theory and World Culture Theory, can you
suggest a hybrid theory that encompasses elements from both perspectives? If so, how would this theory provide a
more comprehensive understanding of the complexities of the current global landscape?

Isaiah,
I love how you explained the World-System Theory, particularly in delineating the hierarchy between core nations,
semi-peripheral nations, and peripheral nations. The world system theory basically says that core nations are the
most dominant of the three and the entire economic system of the world exists merely to serve them. One caveat is
that no one core nation can dominate indefinitely: the world is multi-polar, with each "pole" trying to outdo the oth
through an endless race of in which the objective is to accumulate resources, power (both hard and soft) and status
As you mentioned, the World Systems Theory contains inherent structural inequalities, which only perpetuate
themselves through time. In my own opinion, unequal distribution of wealth is not unjust of in itself, however, wealt
distribution exists only to benefit society as a whole. I believe it is important for those who produce (and lead the
production of) economic resources should receive fair compensation for their efforts. However, I also believe that
even the poorest of the poor should be able to afford basic human necessities, such as food, adequate living
quarters, and medicine. Disparities can and will exist in any system but these two are fundamental economic goals
that should be strived for.

One aspect of the World Culture Theory is "Glocalization" in which the "global" human culture is put into many loca
cultures. Each local culture is free to add their own local flavors to this "global" standard. But, as you said, the theor
of having one global culture is overly simplistic. There is a dynamic interplay between various cultural influences
creating many hybrid cultures, which in turn, can become a culture unto themselves.
Each theory emphasizes certain qualities and it is only a matter of understanding which qualities are important here
and why.

Hello Isaiah.
The description you provided for the different types of globalization are very well explained. The definition you
provided to back up your conclusion is on point. We also have very similar ways of looking at the cultural theory.
Thank you for sharing your conclusion.
Kind Regards.

This week we learn about the three globalization theories:
World-System Theory
Globalization is defined as the process of the capitalist world-system spreading throughout the real globe. This process
was finished in the twentieth century and is considered to constitute globalization. According to the summary, Europea
constructed an occupational and geographical division of labor in which capital-intensive manufacturing was reserved f
core nations while periphery regions supplied low-skill labor and raw materials. This division of labor was based on the
idea that different occupations required different skill levels. As a result, there is a gap—and it's an unfair gap—betwee
people from Europe and those from other parts of the world (Lechner, 2001). In short, this system focuses on the
importance of the world as unit instead of looking at individual countries.
World Polity Theory
According to Lechner, Globalization is defined as the expansion and improvement of world culture (Lechner, 2001). Mat
fact, the world polity theory is also known as world-society theory, is widely used in sociological perpective to analyze

world culture, organization and change (Boli, Gallo-Cruz & Mathias, 2011).
World Culture Theory
The term "world culture theory" refers to a certain interpretation of globalization that centers on the manner in which
individuals who are a part of the process of globalization become aware of and give meaning to the fact that they are
living in the globe as a single place. (Lechner, 2001). In this sense, the term "globalization" refers to both the condensin
of the globe and the intensification of awareness of the world as a whole; in other words, it encompasses the quickenin
of both the realization of the global whole and the actualization of true global interdependence. The term "world cultur
refers to the different ways in which the global situation might be defined, all of which are believed to be responses to
this shared challenge.
I believe that the global culture idea is great because it makes it easier for people and enterprises to travel about and
conduct operations in a variety of locations. This, in turn, generates chances for the development of wealth. On the oth
hand, I don’t quite agree with the world-system theory. Despite the fact that countries depend on one another for
resources, the world system theory of globalization holds that inequality will result through states' continued exploitatio
of those in other countries.
