1. What factors determine the interpretation or spin that a particular news story will receive? There are several factors that can determine the interpretation or spin that a particular story will receive. For example, news organizations, publishers, and journalists play a vital role in influencing news coverage. Although news outlets are supposed to provide balanced coverage, some may have different interpretations of a particular news story. For example, contemporary publishers are only concerned about the business end of journalism. While on the other hand, liberal and Republican views can be seen in other news stories. Larger newspapers may have a liberal orientation while smaller newspaper support Republicans (Lowi et al., 2019). Politicians, public officials, and other news sources can also determine factors within the spin of a story. We have seen in the media countless press releases that provide information on political issues. This is largely due to government agencies, politicians, and interest groups advocating a certain perspective on particular news stories and hiring journalists to promote their perspective and manipulate news coverage. According to the textbook " American Government: Power and Purpose" , The president and other politicians may also attempt to control the spin of news stories by hiring skilling publicists to influence coverage. Whistleblowers and leakers even seek quick alliances with journalists on inside governmental information. In conclusion, America is perceived as a business, and information that is appealing to consumers is a powerful determinant in news coverage. Citizens of America, along with publishers, the news outlet itself, government agencies, monetarily benefits, politicians, and journalists can determine the interpretation or spin that a particular story will receive (Lowi et al., 2019). 2. What is the difference between judicial activism and judicial restraint? What role does ideology play in judicial decision-making? Supreme Court justices attempt to perceive themselves to society as apolitical as they make decisions based on the law and the facts of the case. However, judges display judicial restraint and judicial review as they serve on the supreme court. According to the textbook " American Government: Power and Purpose" , Judicial restraint is the supreme court justice not injecting their preferences into legal proceedings (Lowi et al., 2019). It’s referred to as when one refused to go beyond the text of the Constitution in interpreting its meaning. However, Judicial activism is seen as an antonym to judicial restraint. It is described as the judicial philosophy that supreme court justices should see beyond the text of the Constitution and consider broader societal implications for its decisions. Judicial activism asserts that the court makes see beyond the text of the Constitution and makes a decision based on their individual ideology (Lowi et al., 2019)
Along with judicial restraint and judicial activism, ideology also plays an essential role in the judicial decision-making process. For example, the ideology and philosophies of its justice shape the court decisions. The ideology of judges is categorized by their personal opinion and liberal and conservative activists. Ideology plays a vital role in the judicial decision-making process as one’s personal ideologies and values can have an influence on the case. In conclusion, judicial restraint is the judicial philosophy in which one refuses to beyond the constitutional text, judicial activism is the judicial philosophy that the courts should go beyond the constitutional text and consider broader societal implications for their decisions. Ideology plays a powerful role in the judicial decision- making process and judges' personal opinions and values can be a determinant factor in their decisions (Lowi et al., 2019). 3. What criteria do voters use to decide among competing candidates? That is, what factors influence vote choice? Which are most important? 1. There are several criteria that voters use to decide among competing candidates. According to the textbook " American Government: Power and Purpose" , The most important factor that can influence one's vote choice is a particular candidate party affiliation (Lowi et al., 2019). Partisan loyalty is the strongest predictor of how an individual will vote as they support their party's candidate. Issue voting is another factor that can influence one's vote. Individuals usually side with candidates whose positions are closely aligned to their own on salient issues. Voters can also evaluate their candidate prospectively, retrospectively, or on valence issues, which also can be a deciding factor on who a person may vote for. Lastly, candidates' physical characteristics and personal beliefs may also influence the people's vote as one may choose a candidate that aligns with their beliefs or appearance. In conclusion, voters use party identification, issue voting, personal beliefs, and physical characteristics to determine who they will vote for among the competing candidates. Party identification is seen as the most important influential factor as voters tend to support their party's political candidate (Lowi et al., 2019) 2. . What factors account for differences in public opinion? According to the textbook " American Government: Power and Purpose" , public opinion is the aggregation of citizens' views and interests regarding political issues, leaders, and events (Lowi et al.,2019). Public opinion can also exist on a variety of issues such as political orientations, assessments of public policies, and assessments of current circumstances. Factors that account for differences in public opinion are preferences, socialization, beliefs, social groups, and choices. One's preferences reflect what people want and are characterized by their intensity. On the other hand, beliefs reflect what people think and how they understand the world. These factors are important as they shape the differences in individuals' public opinion. Lastly, one’s public opinion is a
product of their personality, social characteristics, and interests. Opinions can also be shaped by institutional, political, and governmental forces (Lowi et al., 2019).
