Why did the colonist came to america - Religion freedom - Escape persecutions - Political freedom and economic opportunity - They started the mayflower which was like self government (1690) but couldn't do much because they were still tied to great britain Revolutionary war ( 1775) - First continental congress met ( before the war) - Fought the british because of high taxes ( taxation without representation) the british army stayed in their houses ( quareting ) and because they wanted self-government) - Not everyone wanted to break from britain so thomas paine wrote ( common sense ) and it encourage colonies to fight for egalitarian government and break from british rule Declaring Independence ( july 4th) ( life,liberty,pursuit of happiness ) (1776) - Our independence from great britain - Only white men were declared equal african american did not become noticed until the 14th amendment - Thomas jefferson main author, also signed by 55 other people Articles of confederation ( the first original plan for the government ) U.S constitution ( got rid of the articles of confederations ) -1779 Supreme law of the land - We are a representative democracy ( vote) - House of representatives, represent the most about our country John Admans- wrote no one is above the law ( limited government ) The federalist paper - 85 essays written to support of the u.s constitution - Authors were ( james madison, alexandra hamilton, john jay) - Written under a pen name ( plubius) and published in new york papers- why they should ratify the constitution Anti- federalist were people who was against the constitution AMENDMENTS AND BILLS OF RIGHTS
- DEFINITION AMENDMENTS: can change or be added to ( first 10 amendment are considered our bills of rights 1791) - Can only be made by ⅔ vote in senate and house of representatives or by a special convention ( requested by ⅔ of the states) - Amendments must then be ratified by ¾ of the states - 27 total amendments 10 amendments ( bill of rights ) 1.
