The history of the UFCW can be traced back to 1979. However, the various industries that comprise the organization have a rich and distinguished past (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). Trade unionism in North America initially began in the fields where UFCW members currently work, and these workers often acted as a catalyst for early reforms in the labor movement. The outstanding leadership of the UFCW has significantly contributed to its growth since its establishment (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). These men and women made a lifelong commitment to serve not only UFCW members, but all working people, and devoted their lives to the labor movement. Thanks to their tireless efforts, North American workers have transformed and now have a powerful voice at work for themselves and future generations (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). What is the mission/vision statement? The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) is a labor union with over 1.3 million members in the United States and Canada. As a 501(c)(5) nonprofit organization, they believe in the power of regular people coming together to improve their lives

and create long-term change for all working people (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). What is the strategic plan of the organization? The UFCW works towards their goal by negotiating contracts for their members that outline improvements to pay and working conditions. They also represent individual members in discussions with management when issues arise (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). In addition, the UFCW provides a secure and confidential outlet for employees to seek clarification on their legal rights at work, without fear of reprisal. The organization emphasizes the importance of treating all employees with respect and dignity and supports legislative measures to defend workers' rights and counter efforts by the business community to erode those rights (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). Finally, the UFCW serves as a watchdog to balance the influence of highly compensated industrial lobbyists and develops plans to address regional and international trends (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). Covered positions are the types of jobs in the union (i.e, welders, service workers, IT, engineers, teachers, etc.).

The UFCW supports hard-working families and frontline workers in America. The UFCW advocates for the following groups of individuals: grocery and retail workers, healthcare professionals, cannabis workers, chemical workers, wine and alcohol industry employees, and booksellers. What are some of the services provided to members? UFCW works tirelessly to improve the working conditions and raise the standards in the industries they represent. They understand that victories are not handed out but are earned through hard work and dedication (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). As a result, members of the union enjoy better wages and benefits compared to nonunion workers. On average, union workers earn over $190 more per week than their nonunion counterparts (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). Moreover, they are more likely to have jobs that provide health insurance, paid vacation, holidays, sick leave, scheduling overtime protection, and other benefits. Union workers also have more rights that protect them on the job than nonunion workers (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023). UFCW contracts establish standards that aim to eliminate the gender wage gap and combat discrimination regardless of gender, age, race, creed, color, country of origin, status of citizenship, language spoken, pregnancy status, family status, sexual orientation, or gender identity (United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, 2023).
