Module One Discussion Part One Since this course is very discussion based, Part One of this discussion will be to introduce yourselves and get to know one another by answering the following questions: What are your plans in school? What are your academic interests and what do you want to study? What are your expectations and hesitations for this course? Feel free to include any additional information about yourself that you would like (such as where you are from, your interests, etc.). Part Two Identify and discuss at least three ways state and local governments can affect daily life. o Your examples can come from your course text or outside sources (or both!), but make sure to cite all sources using MLA format (including your course text). How would you rate your current understanding of state and local government? Did any of the examples you discussed teach you anything/surprise you? Why is it important to understand state and local politics? The three ways that local and state government can affect daily life would be classes required to take for college, taxes on individual items, and laws for pets. Local state and government choose what classes a college student need to take in order to graduate (Smith and Greenblatt 3) and that could be different for each state. One example would be Florida's "The Gordon Rule", which requires students to take 12 credits that demonstrate college writing skills as well as credits for math and each have to have a C or higher to have it registered (The Gordon Rule). My first college was in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and they did not have the Gordon Rule. Another way local and state government affect daily life would be the taxes that American need to pay for, and each state has different tax prices for the same item. One item that is taxed differently would be soda and that is because of the sugar it contains. The sales tax on a can of soda can range anywhere between 0 and 8 percent which would depend on the city and state you would live in (Smith and Greenblatt 5).
The last way that state and local government affects daily lives would be the laws or requirements for pets. Some states require you to pay taxes for dogs while other states you just need to have your dog registered (Smith and Greenblatt 4). The same can go for what breeds of dogs you are allowed to own and every state and city has different regulations. I would rate my current understanding of state and local government pretty low, as I have only recently started to get interested in it. I think one of the surprises after reading the first chapter was that each state has different taxes on soda. I think the main reason why its important to understand local and state government would be to give yourself a voice for your community. If you don't like how the transportation is run, or you don't like a high tax on an item you can speak up and help make change and by knowing how your local government works that could be a big advantage when you and go and make your concerns heard.
