Government 9/5/2023 Politics: Determining who gets what, when, where, and how in society. Political power is the power over another person to get something you want. Government is a political system by which a country or community is administered. Aristotle, father of political science, believed the health of the city was greater than the health of the household. - Monarchy: ruled by one - Aristocracy: ruled by the best - Oligarchy: ruled by a few Social contract is an implicit agreement among the members of society to cooperate for social benefits. - Thomas Hobbes wrote about the state of nature. - John Locke believed people are born with natural rights. Life, liberty, and property. He believed people should have the ability to self-govern or limited government. - Jean Jacques Rousseau believed people were born good. Democracy is predicated on self-determination, the ability of people to make decisions for themselves. - Direct democracy: people participating directly in government (Rousseau) - Representative democracy: Selecting other people to make decisions on their behalf (Locke) A republic is a form of government in which a state is ruled by representatives of the citizen body. Because citizens do not govern the state themselves but through representatives, the republic may be distinguished from direct democracy. The US is both democratic and constitutional republic meaning people of their representatives have sovereign power. A political culture is how nations and communities come to understand their politics and government as unique to them.
American exceptionalism is the belief (or myth) that America has superior qualities that set it apart from other nations. - Equality: The state in which all people have the same status, rights, and opportunities. - Individualism: Moral worth and responsibility of the individual in society
