DEJ Summary Paragraph The government is all powerful and their surveillance into your personal life is inescapable. Throughout the first two pages of this story, it is mentioned quite a few times how “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING” , and specifically, “It was the police patrol, snooping into people’s windows.” (Orwell 4) , describing how there is no personal life and no privacy for the citizens of Oceania. This creates a sense of fear and paranoia among the people, as they are constantly being watched and monitored for any signs of disobedience or rebellion against the Party. The use of propaganda posters and telescreens reinforces the government's control over the minds of the citizens. The poster of Big Brother's face with the caption "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU" is a prominent example of how the government abuses fear and intimidation to keep the citizens in line . “The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely.” (Orwell 4) The telescreen, which cannot be turned off completely, is a symbol and reminder of the government’s presence and absolute control over every citizen of Oceania. The description of Winston's appearance, “a smallish, frail figure, the meagreness of his body merely emphasized by the blue overalls which were the uniform of the party.” (Orwell 4) , also highlights the oppressive nature of the government. Their individuality expressed through the way they dress is controlled by the party. This shows that the party has power and control over every single aspect of people’s lives. Overall, the first two pages of 1984 set the tone for the rest of the novel, establishing the oppressive and totalitarian regime of the government and the lack of freedom and privacy for the citizens. The use of surveillance, propaganda, and control over personal appearance all contribute to creating a sense of dread and hopelessness among the people of Oceania.
