Real World Challenge – Civic Engagement Essay
You have been hired by an interest group / public policy research foundation related to your
career (or your major).
You have been asked to identify a policy recommendation that is relevant to your career or major
field of study, or for an issue that matters to you.
In addition to your policy recommendation, what recommendation would you make to citizens
who have an opinion about this issue?
How can citizens most effectively participate in the
political process?
Demonstrate what you’ve learned about the institutions of American
government!
For example, your answer may discuss the following details:
●
To which level of government should they communicate their opinion on this issue?
Why?
●
Which branch (or branches) of government are most relevant for your policy
recommendation? Why?
●
Is there data on public opinion toward your policy recommendation? (If your policy
deals with something like abortion, environmental regulation, or marijuana, that the
country has been debating for years, there is likely to be lots of survey data.
On the
other hand, if it is something very specific to a single industry, or that hasn’t been a
matter of public dispute, there may have never been a survey asking about it.)
