Abraham's early years, as detailed in Abraham 1:1, may have
overlapped with the lifetime of Noah, potentially allowing personal
acquaintance. In Abraham 1:19, the Lord invokes the covenant with
Noah to instruct Abraham on the divine covenant that will bind
them. Elder Neal A. Maxwell underscores the disciples' inherent
curiosity, emphasizing Abraham's quest for greater knowledge,
peace, and priesthood blessings. The pursuit of divine
understanding, as exemplified by Abraham, becomes a means to
increase knowledge, effectiveness, and joy. The concept of "the
right belonging to the fathers" in Abraham 1:2 reflects the
patriarchal order, where priesthood authority descends from father
to son. President Ezra Taft Benson links this order to Abraham's
righteous desire to follow the same path, emphasizing its continuity
from Adam to Noah and onward.
I think my favorite thing about today's reading is how Abraham is an example that
the trials of your upbringing do not define who you can become. I cannot imagine
how scary it must have been for Abraham to be offered as sacrifice, especially when
he knew that what these people were doing was against everything that God had
instructed, but it is awesome how he strived to be a "prince of peace" and to follow
the commandments. For me, reading this aspect of Abraham's life made me think
about how the difference of who we can become depends much more on how we
react to situations, instead of on the situation itself.
I learn from Abraham's experience is that he exercised faith and trusted God, He
believed that God will deliver him from the hard situation he found himself in. He
even offered his son up when he was commanded to do so. I think it takes a
different amount of faith. I have come to realize that its more than just admitting
with words that we have faith; it's showing our actions that we can trust God and
have faith in him to guide us through hard situations. Abraham set an example for
all of us and when we follow his example, we too can receive the blessings promised
to Abraham.
I am always amazed when I read about Abraham and the faith that he had even
when his own father was turning to idolatry. This makes me think of how often we
have to deal with similar things today, when everyone else around us are making
poor decisions, we have to make the choice that we will remain faithful. It also
brings me comfort that when we do the best we can to remain faithful, the Lord will
always bless us and take care of us with what we need even when we don’t always
realize it at the time. When we do the best we can we will be blessed for it and
Abraham is a great example of that.
