Ethical research is the practice of conducting research in an ethical manner, by upholding ethical
principles and values. Examples include obtaining informed consent, maintaining confidentiality,
conducting research that is clear and justifiable. Adhering to professional codes of conduct and
guidelines serves to maintain integrity and respect for participants. Ethical misconduct is when
actions or behaviors violate professional codes of conduct in research. Plagiarism, fabrication,
falsification, lack of informed consent and many others are all examples of ethical misconduct.
Plagiarism is when someone presents another person’s work, ideas, or words as their own work,
idea, or words. Citations or proper acknowledgments of the work, idea, or words are not
included. It is very important that we practice integrity and respect as healthcare professionals in
our everyday practices.
One example of a research project that did not adhere to ethical standards is the Tuskegee
Syphilis Study. Between the years 1932 and 1972,
600 syphilis patients participated in what they
believed that they were going to be treated, but in reality, they never were treated even though
treatment was available, and they were not given an option to opt out of the study.
The research
was unethical since it went against the values of beneficence and autonomy.
