Primary Argument
Intro
The argument I have chosen is social media and the effects it has on mental health. In the article,
the author Lawrence Robinson& Melinda Smith, capital M.A. Presents the argument using both
pros and cons of social media. The authors argue that using social media allows you to stay
connected with friends and family members all while also telling readers excessive usage of
social media may also trigger a variety of mental health issues. Both Robson and Smith cool
themselves guilty of also using social media excessively. However, both are very cautious about
not including their personal thoughts and biases. Doing this will allow the readers to gain
knowledge and create their own opinions on the topic discussed. Doing this will allow the
author’s readers to figure out if they are having some side effects from being addicted to social
media outlets.
Primary Argument
Overall, this argument is strong and solid. All the resources that are referenced back up all claims
throughout the argument, presented by Robinson and Smith. More specifically, the articles
mentioned studies that have taken place throughout the entire article. The author continuously
mentions that innumerable amounts of mental health disorders and various unfortunate
experiences can come from the excessive usage of social media. During this study that was
published in 2022, Wilson and Stack, of the authors of the article titled.” social media comes
with good and, doesn’t it?” We’re trying to explore and find out if social media was helping or
harming young adults who were living with long-term conditions. There also was a few negative
impacts of social media usage that were reported by multiple participants along with some
positive impacts as well. Participants have reported “having increased social support,
experiencing shared, understanding, and empathy, and engaging in reciprocally, supportive
relationships”, (Wilson & Stack,2021). Other participants have reported they have also noticed
increased emotional support and reduced depression. The usage of social media requires a need
for being able to balance your own self-awareness, self-restraint, and lastly self-reflection.
Although social media usage has its own pros and cons, it is also used as an outlet for a safe
space that some users do not otherwise have.
Counterargument
For my counterargument, some people may rightfully argue that social media is helpful to us
while some may argue social media is harmful to us. Truthfully, social media can be both
harmful and beneficial to us. It’s up to us to put the limits we need on our social media usage. I
have identified 2 premises, one being there are numerous groups that are advertising on social
media outlets. Groups are meeting and recruiting on various social media platforms such as
Google Meet, Snapchat, Facebook, and Zoom conferences. Doctors are also now utilizing virtual
care sessions in order to better assist their clients. Society today always has room for change, and
it is currently changing the way the social world works today. In my opinion, I believe this
argument is inductive. In the text, it states “inductive arguments provide support but not proof of
a conclusion"(Boss, 2021). My counterargument avoids bias because my conclusion backs up
both premises without providing any resources.
