Lesson 02.04 Supporting the Argument To download this file, click: File ” → “ Download As ” → Choose your file format, & SAVE to your AP LANG folder that you have created . Your Assignment For this assessment, you will use the Supporting the Argument: Plan and Outline Worksheet to choose a topic, develop your position, perform research to gather evidence, avoid logical fallacies, and strategically synthesize the evidence in an outline. You will also demonstrate your ability to identify and correct logical fallacies in a quiz.
Supporting the Argument: Plan and Outline Directions: There are four parts to this assignment. Please read the instructions carefully. Part 1 : Choose a topic from the following list: Social media: Some people claim that frequent use of social media can have negative effects on teenagers who may already exhibit addictive behaviors or mental health disorders. Should social media use be restricted for all teens? What about teenagers who show no signs of disorders? Ethical labor: The United States has been opening factories in underdeveloped nations that offer dramatically low-paying jobs for extreme conditions and long hours. What effect does it have on the American economy? Is it ethical for the United States to continue this practice? Video games: Some say that the experience of controlling characters in violent video games can have an impact on the players' ability to control their anger in the real world. Do games’ interactive qualities make them potentially more dangerous than films, books, or television? Should violent video games be banned or censored? Gender-specific toys: Gender-specific toys have been a widely accepted norm. What evidence is there to support or contradict the claim that boys and girls naturally prefer different toys and colors? Is there a benefit to promoting these differences? Should stores discontinue gender-based separations of toys on their shelves? Exam efficacy: Most states and school districts use standardized exams to determine a student’s level of expertise in a subject. Is there a better way to test mastery in schools? Should exams be replaced with a different form of assessment? Part 2 : In a complete sentence, state your position on your chosen issue. This will be your thesis. - Social media affects teenahers’ mental health and should be restricted for all teens. Part 3 : Perform research to gather evidence to support your position (thesis). You need a total of six sources, along with quotes to support your claim, an explanation showing how the quote/evidence supports your position, and the full Modern Language Association (MLA) citation. Use the organizer below to organize your research.
SOURCE TITLE and AUTHOR Quotations from the source to support your claim How does this source help you connect your claim (position) to the data (evidence)? Explain how the evidence strengthens your position. Full MLA Citation 1. Social Media and Mental Health, By Lawrence Robinson and Melinda Smith, M.A. “A study at the University of Pennsylvania found that high usage of Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram increases rather decreases feelings of loneliness . Conversely, the study found that reducing social media usage can actually make you feel less lonely and isolated and improve your overall wellbeing.” According to “Social Media and Mental Health,” excessive use of social media platforms increases the feeling of loneliness. Because teenagers have an addictive behavior to social media, it can limit social interaction which leads to the lonely feeling implicated. Robinson, Lawrence. “Social Media and Mental Health.” HelpGuide.Org , 29 Mar. 2023, www.helpguide.org/ articles/mental-heal th/social-media-and -mental-health.htm. 2. Online Social Networking and Mental Health, Igor Pantic , MD, PhD Recently, however, some researchers have associated online social networking with several psychiatric disorders, including depressive symptoms, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Social Media is strongly connected to symptoms of depression and anxiety. 3. The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health, Christine M. Stabler, MD, MBA Having a whole digital world at your fingertips can put a damper on getting out and having real social connections and in-person interactions. With so much to do on the internet, it can become addictive and time-consuming, decreasing time to have real life interactions, which increases loneliness. Stabler, MD, MBA, Christine M. “The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health.” Lancastergeneralhe alth.Org , www.lancastergene ralhealth.org/health -hub-home/2021/se ptember/the-effects -of-social-media-on -mental-health. 6. Part 4 : Create an outline using the following template and your work in Parts 1, 2, and 3. Strategically structure your argument and synthesize your research. Write in complete sentences, but remember—you are not writing an entire essay; you ar e only PLANNING the essay using the outline template below. 1. Introduction 1. Grab the reader’s attention. - Social media is an innovative online platform that has fundamentally altered people's perspectives on the world and grown to be an essential component of our culture. 2. Set a context for the issue. - Social media is becoming an essential instrument for everyday social contact as a result of the development and growth of technology. The fact that 2.65 billion people use social media and that figure is expected to rise in the next few years highlights the importance of social media in our world (Clement, 2019). While social media has greatly benefited our society, it also has a significant detrimental effect on young people. 3. State your claim (thesis). - Although social media can be instructive and beneficial in some cases, nevertheless, social media has a negative impact on teenagers, especially teenagers already exhibiting mental health disorders, due to the fact that it limits social interaction, elicits negative emotions rather than positive, and has been found to be a strong link to depression and anxiety. 2. Argument (repeat this structure for as many paragraphs as you need to thoroughly support your claim) 1. State your topic sentence. 2. Provide evidence to support your claim, including the MLA citation. 3. Explain how the evidence supports your claim. 4. Provide additional logic or reasoning to support the evidence, if necessary. 3. Counterargument 1. Mention the counterclaim.
2. Refute the counterclaim with evidence that disproves the counterclaim, including the MLA citation. 4. Conclusion 1. Come full circle by referring back to claim in the introduction. 2. Briefly summarize the most relevant and valuable points in a fresh way. 3. Show the significance (the “So what?”) of your claim and the implications the audience should now understand as a result of your carefully crafted argument. Social Media: Some people claim that frequent use of social media can have negative effects on teenagers who may already exhibit addictive behaviors or mental health disorders. Should social media use be restricted for all teens? What about teenagers who show no signs of disorders?
