“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise
man who built his house on the rock.
And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the
winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on
the rock.” (Mat 7:24-25) Jesus spoke these words during his ministry and I find useful
still for what this symbolizes. As a body of Christ what is the basis of the foundation our
house is built upon in faith. I pray that the topics covered will strengthen the foundation
of faith and bring more understanding to what it means believe in God and all things
from God. During this time we will cover the areas of theology such as what it is, the
nature and sources, and why it is necessary in our faith.
Theology is the study of God and all things of and from Him. It is what we aim to
learn and understand our entire life and pray things are revealed to us along the way. It
is our driving force as Christians takes us deeper into His character. As referenced by
Ron Highfield in one of his chapters, “Theology is taught by God, teaches of God and
leads to God.” (Highland, R. 2008) What an excellent way to describe it. As a whole, the
church must continue to search God’s character to stay in line with who God is and
what He wants us to do here on earth. Theology is vital for our spiritual development
and our intellectual understanding of our faith. God will reveal all that is needed to
develop these things in each of us but it is our duty to stay disciplined and continue to
seek and learn. As we continue to seek and dedicate our lives to learn about Him, he
will reveal Himself and His character to us, so we may live a blessed life. We will be
able to spread the gospel the more we understand and live with His character. This is all
part of His glorious design for His people.

Through theology comes the education of being biblically faithful in the study of
God. Being biblically faithful has a lot of different components to it. First and foremost is
believing the gospel. Scripture is the word of God and should hold all the weight in your
belief system. Following basic Christian doctrine and allowing the Spirit to live in you will
help you live out what God has called you to do. By the way that you live, speak,
worship, raise your children, the way that you pray and congregate as a church. Another
important fact of being biblically faithful is investing time into the word.
John Calvin
once said, “Therefore, while it becomes man seriously to employ his eyes in considering
the works of God, his special duty is to give ear to the Word, that he may the better
profit. Hence, it is not strange that those who are born in darkness become more and
more hardened in their stupidity; because the vast majority instead of confining
themselves within due bounds by listening with docility to the Word, exult in their own
vanity (Calvin, J 1953).”
Theology is necessary for us to understand who God is. It is the way He reveals
His nature, character, and desire to us. We must continue to seek Him and trust in His
divine word to be true followers. We must strive to allow the Spirit to work through us as
we deliver the gospel to others. Theology has many different explanations over the
centuries with complicated terminology, but for the church, it can be very simple.
Theology is God’s desire for us to know Him. He wants us to know Him, and follow Him.
