Job-Sharing Plans: Their Benefits and Disadvantages

Introduction
In this paper, I will discuss the idea of job-sharing plans, also known as part-time jobs,
their advantages, and disadvantages for companies and employees as well as my opinion on what
the company in the case study should do.
Benefits for companies and employees
Arguments for the job-sharing plan are that the company saves money
as they don't have to provide benefits such as health insurance. The
company could also save money by having multiple part-time workers
instead of full-time employees if the hourly rate is lower. Having multiple
people filling one position could also bring in new mindsets, ideas, and
talents
(Byars & Stanberry, 2019).
Another reason for the company to start a job-sharing plan is that the
employees' morale is higher with fewer working hours, so they also work
more efficiently and get more work done (Byars & Stanberry, 2019). Lastly, a
good reason is that
employees show less absence because of family
responsibilities (Byars & Stanberry, 2019).
Positive aspects of job-sharing plans for the employees is that they are
much more flexible in their daily life regarding family and other private
responsibilities. Generally, by working less the employee has more time for
enjoying hobbies and time with friends and family. Furthermore, it is unlikely
that part-time employees are going to feel overworked because of fewer
working hours.
Negative effects on companies and employees
Negative aspects for employees are that they do not receive benefits
such as health insurance, a retirement plan, or paid leave. Another problem
might be that the employees took the shared job/part-time job only because
they could not find full-time employment. The income might not be enough
for them to live off of.
Problems for the company could be that the work might not get done
quickly if the team that shares one work position does not work together and
doesn't communicate effectively. When they share their position and work on
assignments together, it is important for them to work well as a team.
Employment discrimination
`Potential discrimination could occur because many people need a full-time
position to financially support themselves and their families. If companies
only hire for part-time positions, they would need to work at least two but
would do so without any health insurance and other benefits to rely on. If
these people could not work part-time jobs because if these reasons, the jobs
would mainly fall on people who have a support system and do not need a
full-time income. These could be spouses who's partner works a full-time
position or young adults who live with their parents.
Case study
In my opinion, the company should not split its positions into part-time
jobs. Even though the morale rises and high-quality work could still be
produced, it might go wrong when the company doesn't hire the right team
to work together on this position. Because the unemployment rate is high, it
might benefit people to have a part-time job but it would benefit them even

more to have a full-time position that supports them without having to rely
on government help.
Conclusion
In conclusion, there are good reasons for and against job-sharing plans.
If the employees can financially afford not to get a full-time salary and have
a high amount of family obligations and don't rely on health insurance, a
part-time position is a good alternative.
On the other hand, when people need a full-time position for the
reasons mentioned above but those get scarce because most companies
only offer part-time positions, the job-sharing plan is not a good idea.
