1 Persuasive Essay First Draft Jennifer Burley Grand Canyon University PHI 105 – Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Benjamin Perlin 10/1/2023
2 Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource that poses a threat to the safety of all life on Earth and puts the areas around nuclear power facilities at risk of catastrophic catastrophes. Some may argue that nuclear energy is the most efficient way to produce energy for our world. While other may argue that solar energy is a more efficient/ healthier way to produce energy. Some may argue that nuclear energy is low emissions and a clean way to produce energy but what they are not taking into consideration is the disaster it could cause if there were an explosion or the plant was struck by an outside source, the amount of toxic damage or harm it could cause to those around it. Solar energy is a healthier and more substantive way to produce energy rather than nuclear energy because nuclear energy is a nonrenewable source, it produces radiation that is harmful to our health, and malfunctions during the process can cause catastrophic events. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable source which is a resource that cannot be replenished in a reasonable amount of time. Atomic energy is more expensive than both wind and solar energy. Renewable energy is less expensive than nuclear fission, renewable energy is also getting cheaper over time while fission is getting more expensive. Nuclear power cannot make the country or the world more militarily secure than renewable energy sources, which are low- carbon, sustainable technology. (Schrader-Frechette, K., 2011) Also, the measures to increase the effectiveness of current nonrenewable sources, which still play a significant role in cost reduction and stabilization, should be included in the widespread adoption of renewable energy, and how technologies that change the global atmospheric radiative energy budget in order to stabilize and lower the average world temperature. (Kabeyi & Olanrewaju, 2022) Using solar energy to produce electricity is significantly more environmentally friendly. Since solar energy is a renewable resource, using it to generate electricity is considerably more efficient than using
3 nuclear power, which is a non-renewable resource. As a result, harnessing solar energy would be a more effective technique to generate energy in the modern world. Not only is nuclear energy a non-renewable source, but nuclear energy also produces radiation that is harmful to our health. Nuclear energy produces radioactive material as its byproduct. Exposure to the highly hazardous radioactive waste from the plants can result in burns, an increased chance of developing cancer, bone deterioration, and blood disorders. The consumption of radioactive food, solar and cosmic radiation from radioactive elements found deep within the earth, radionuclides, whose emissions into the atmosphere occur uncontrollably, and radioactive waste, the disposal and storage of which is technologically and financially expensive, have all been identified as unsafe sources of radiation exposure sourced from nuclear power plants. (Bolotnikova & Malyshevska, 2022) Additionally, when certain of them, like natural gas, are extracted, environmental risks are created, such as the fracturing of the rocks, which could result in minor earthquakes. Water supplies and subterranean reservoirs may get contaminated as a result of natural gas extraction, which could have an impact on both human and animal life. Because of this, using nuclear energy to produce electricity will only have a detrimental effect on the health of residents who live close to nuclear power plants. Not to mention the malfunctions during the nuclear energy process can cause catastrophic events. At least three nuclear-related events with the potential to be catastrophic exist: nuclear war between states, nuclear violence perpetrated by non-state actors, and nuclear accidents in which enormous amounts of radiation are unintentionally released into the environment. (Ackerman & Potter, 2008) The storage and disposal of radioactive nuclear waste, and potential health impacts were the three main issues with nuclear energy. People who lived within 18 miles of a Nuclear Power Plant had a higher relative risk of developing cancer than those who lived

4 farther away. (Ho.J-C. et al., 2014) The chance of any nuclear catastrophic occurrences, such as a nuclear strike from any outside source, as well as the risk of radioactive material being discharged into our fields and crops, will be greatly reduced if nuclear power plants are no longer used to produce our world's electricity. As a result, the probability of a nuclear catastrophe will increase as long as nuclear power plants are used to produce the majority of the world's electricity. Overall, nuclear energy is a less sustainable type of energy, it emits radiation that is damaging to our health, and breakdowns can result in catastrophic catastrophes. Solar energy is a healthier and more reliable alternative. After learning about all the drawbacks of using nuclear energy to produce our electricity and hearing about all the harm that nuclear power plants do to the environment in which we live. As you can see, using nuclear power has more drawbacks than advantages. The extra costs associated with the current nonrenewable source of energy that we refer to as nuclear energy, the risk of health problems, and finally the possibility of any catastrophic events resulting from the use of nuclear power plants could all be avoided if we switched to a much more sustainable source of energy generation, such as solar energy. The beautiful planet we live in will undoubtedly become a much better and happier place to live for our future generations if we can all work together to create a more efficient and healthier world that only uses renewable resources to provide our electricity supply.
