(Consider the practices of their neighbors at  that historical point of time ) The Hebrews new religion was remarkable and unique because they only worshipped one God. This stands out because most religions believed in and worshipped multiple gods. 2. What is the meaning of human existence for the Jews? What is one's purpose? The meaning of human existence to the Jews is that humans are ethical and responsible who are responsive to God. One’s purpose is to follow Gods commandments. Prayer is to be directed to God and no other. 3. How do Jews view history? Jews view history as cycles and focus on repetitive patterns. 4. What are the major divisions (categories) of the books in the Hebrew Bible?
The major divisions of categories are The Five Books of Moses, The Eight Books of the Prophets, and The Eleven books of the Writings. 5. What are the major denominations of Judaism and how do they differ? The major denominations of Judaism are Orthodox which is considered the most modern of Judaism, Reform which believe the evolving nature of Judaism, and Conservative which is conserving essential elements of tradition. 6. How is ancient Judaism (as found in the Hebrew Bible) different from today's Rabbinic Judaism? Rabbinic Judaism is built upon the traditional Jewish traditions while adjusting to new realities. Temple ritual was replaced with prayer service. 7. How did the Jews' concept of morality and justice impact Western Civilization? Jews believed in their responsibility as people to stand up against inequality in the world. This revolutionized social reforms. Shaping that humans can shape their world in a positive way. 9. Discuss the significance of the following religious days observed in Judaism (this is only a partial list): Shabbat is the Jewish day of rest.
Rosh HaShanah is the beginning of the year, also known as Day of Remembrance. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. The holiest day. Sukkot is one of three major festivals in Judaism. (thanksgiving) Simchat Torah is the joy of Torah. Hanukkah means dedication. Tu B'Shvat is the Jewish new year for trees. Purim is a joyous Jewish festival commemorating the survival of Jews. Passover (Pesach) commemorates the slavery of the Israelites in Egypt and their freedom. Shavuot is the second of three Pilgrim Festivals. Tisha B'Av is the traditional day of mourning for the first and second temples. 10. Discuss an aspect of Judaism that appealed to you or one that did not appeal to you. An aspect that appeals to me is believing and worshiping in one God. I just think this is important and stands out to me because I only believe in one God.
