SEMINAR NOTES ~ Seminar #3
1)
Would you classify the actions of the SFF as ‘terrorism’? Why or why not? Discuss.
Yes, I would classify the actions of the SFF as terrorism because freedom fighters fight to
bring down governments to ensure political gains and change. In my opinion terrorism is an act of violence to a group of people, who are innocent and unarmed. Mentioned in
the case study “suicide bombing at a soccer stadium” and driving people over with vehicles are terror attacks. The article “The Mind of God” pretty much states that terrorist’s acts are motivated by political gain and terrorism can be religious and extremely violent. This comes downs to Nationalist Terrorism where the south can separate from the north and both could have their own jurisdiction or states, because both sides have different economical goals, different religions and different beliefs.
2)
What motivations do you identify for the SFF and ROS’s actions? What grievances do you see giving rise to this violence? Discuss.
The SFF is motivated by the support of OMEGA country both mainly catholic, major square footage and minor population that contains high poverty and unemployment. The majority of ROS are protestant, economically successful and the majority are loyal to the protestant faith, major population of 70% of Mugasa on small square footage and
dominate the National government of Mugasa. The grievances in this case includes, SFF and Omega, both strong Catholics and share historical, cultural, religious and linguistic values. The SFF might feel alienation from the North, they might feel humiliated, in the last 200 years there has been issues between both parties and this could be an historical
wrong doing. The SFF want to be separated from the north therefore claim of territories
can be and issues. If the ROS of the North does not support the SFF, then the Protestant, will dominate and take over Mugasa, making it Protestant country which can
eventually cause problems with Omega (Catholic).
3)
What role is religion playing in this violence? What role is religion playing in the making of peace? How significant is the role of religion in each of these areas? Discuss.
Religion play’s a big role with violence, Catholic and Protestant differ in their belief systems therefore the neighbor (Omega) supports the same religion (Catholics) which includes the SFF. The SFF and Omega are defending the Catholic religion, which possibly
can lead to a Holy War. I don’t think religion is playing any role in the peace making, the
SFF are conducting violent attacks in large mall’s in Mugasa’s. If religion played a role in peace making, the would not be involved in the killing of innocent people. Separating religion from politics can be a step towards peace making, destroying violence, healing politics with religion are a few possible solutions. Religion does play a significant role and countries unite together because of religions, in this case the SFF and Omega are both Catholics. 4)
Is the Mugasan – Omega war an example of a ‘just war’? On whose part? Why or why not? What ‘just war’ elements do you see at play in this situation? Discuss.
1
The Just War action is conducted by Mugasan because of the series of events that have occurred in the city, events that included massive causalities and injuries. There was an attempt of assassination on Mugasa Prime Minister, stabbings at the rock concerts and serious injuries that have increased the death toll. The article “Online Bonus: Just War vs. Just Peacemaking” talks about the government’s role when it comes to Just War, one
of the them being the use of deadly force to resist tyrannical evil and disagrees that war should not be used to impose new visions and social order. Basically, the Mugasan government invaded Omega because they were supporting the SFF and promoting them
to conduct in act of terror and violent attacks. The principals of Jus Ad Bellum include just cause/right intentions because Mugasan intentions where to re-stablish peace not to take property away. Probability of success, another principle because they were economically, politically and military success full, they had the money and the power. Last resort is another principle the Mugasan considered, history of conflict between the north and the south have been going on for over 200 years, and the most recent the violent crimes have taken many lives and attempt to assassinate the Prime Minister therefore this is a last resort for them, necessary to take action.
5)
OPTIONAL: The interviewer has added a spontaneous question: “I know your experience also extends to Kammer’s moralscape model. What would you recommend to Mugasa and Omega concerning this situation? What elements of your moralscape are influencing your recommendation?” (Note to students – This is an optional question. You are not required to complete this question.)
My prospective approach would be to end the violence and to share our economical system to improve jobs and avoid poverty, to work with SFF and to overcome challenges
or barriers between both sides. To make it clear we are one country. Utilitarian approach, the greatest good for the greatest amount of people. My decision is based on
my loyalties, how I was brought up and introduced to the world. Religions don’t promote violent acts or terrorism. Worldview beliefs, looking through the world with different lenses and working within the Mugasa and Omega people to grow politically, economically, culturally strong together.
