D095 Task 1 A1. My future class is 5 th grade, general education. I will use direct instruction and learning stations that are relevant to the subject being taught. A2. My philosophy towards my role as classroom manager is creating a space to nourish and encourage learning. I would be responsible for creating a positive atmosphere, where all the students feel open to learn and engage with each other. The space will be safe for everyone to ask questions and pursue knowledge. My classroom be will a productive learning environment that includes all my students and gives them the opportunities to include their knowledge and curiosity into the conversations. By engaging the students and discovering their personalities and interests, I will be establishing a learning environment inclusive to the diverse student body I teach. A3. I want the kids to be respectfully to everyone in the classroom. I want the students to follow directions. And lastly, I want them to clean up their mess. A4. My classroom layout would include learning stations setup along the back of the classroom. There may be four to six stations open, based on relevance to the material being taught. My desk would be offset to the board to promote direct instruction. The students’ seating would include three large round tables to seat five students each, additionally, five to ten individual desks that can be separated for independent study or grouped for collaborative study. Along one of the walls, there will be space for two or three computers for research, as well as a shelf for additional content and materials. A4a. The classroom layout would change from direct instruction to an activity of group circle time. This is an activity that promotes group exchanges, big and small, and it is done on the floor. I would have the students help to push back the tables and desks towards the walls, to open a large space for everyone to gather and engage in the lesson. A5. I will set a morning routine to have the students ready for the day. 1. Walk into the room. 2. Put up your bag. 3. Gather supplies needed: paper, pencils, etc. 4. Be seated. 5. Ready to learn. I will also include an end of the day routine. 1. Gather materials needed for homework. 2. Pack your bag up. 3. Clean your space up and throw trash away. 4. Organize centers. 5. Line up for dismissal. A5a. The kids will be taught these routines and procedures from the first time they enter the room. Verbal reminders will be given to those that need them, and there will be routine posters up for visual reminders of the procedures. A6. Three specific rules for my classroom are follow directions, raise your hand to speak, and walk in the classroom. A6a. The rules will inform the students of the basic expectations of them, while in class. These rules will be supported through the norms of the classroom, which are respecting everyone in the room and listening to each other and the teacher. We will do this by helping each other and working together. A6b. The classroom rules will be displayed as a daily reminder and taught on the first day of school. A7. The positive reinforcement that will be used for when a student follows the norms, rules, and procedures will be words of encouragement and praise. Students need support, and positivity helps to build healthy emotional and social relationships. Consequences of breaking the rules, procedures, and
norms will be addressed with warnings and the student can have the chance to correct the mistake themselves. If the action continues, pull the student aside and get to know what the reason may be for the constant disregard of rules. A8. All students will be involved in the plan by helping establish the norms of the classroom. They will contribute norms and expectations to a list, and these norms will be compiled into concrete rules. The students’ roles in participating in a productive and collaborative learning environment is to help each other, when needed. They can remind one another of norms, rules, and procedures, instead of asking the teacher. The roles that students hold in the classroom, can build positive self-esteem and character.
