Should public schooling be redefined/what aspect needs the most change?
Yes, I agree public schooling should be redefined for many reasons. In Johnson and Reed, chapter 7 education is referred to as “the great equalizer of the conditions of men” but how can it be the great equalizer if it is not a system that is open to all? As we have learned in this class, since the nineteenth century, education has been focused on
sculpting productive members of the community who benefit and contribute to their society. This does not take into consideration any special skills a student may have or give a student a place to think critically. Today, public schools accept students based on
assessment tests, IQ scores, and how much someone can spend on a house (Koonce, 2020). Standardized testing does not look at students as a whole. I believe if we do away with standardized tests for admission into schools we can focus more on meeting the needs of students and not “teaching for the test”. I believe to truly get your students to love education and learning schools should be centered around “fitting the needs of its community” rather than making a student fit a mold that they may not fit (Koonce, 2020).
Discussion Questions:
1.
Do you think that students would be more equal if there was only public education offered?
2.
Most schools offer life skills/ADL classes in high school, do you think ADL classes should be provided to students from elementary school? 3.
Have you ever worked in a “resource room” class where you had to provide another way for a student to take an exam? Do you think it was something that can be incorporated into the classroom so the student doesn’t have to go to a separate room?
