WEEK 7: Case study On Ethics
1.
Based on this information, what type of ethics is Elizabeth practicing—egoism, utilitarianism, or altruism? Why do you categorize her ethics this way?
Based off the information provided,
I believe
that Elizabeth is practicing egoism based off her decision to cut short the survey in order to realize her personal dream of being on television.
2.
Do you agree or disagree with the way Elizabeth handled this situation? What should she have done differently?
I highly disagree.
Elizabeth compromised the validity of the survey by cutting short the timeline to complete the survey on Gun Control.
Elizabeth should have allowed for her team to complete the survey with 1,000 people so that the statistics she provides to the commentator and politician were accurate.
3.
Do you agree or disagree with the way her team handled this situation? What
should her team have done differently?
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, Elizabeth’s team is who handles the research for the university, and I believe in their role they must adhere to ethical research, no matter the order. Now on the other hand, I can see how the team may feel
demoralized due to Elizabeths egoistic leadership approach to the point that they would accept Elizabeths request. I believe the team could have done two things differently; oppose her idea due to ethical reasons, or they should have disclosed the fact that the sample was not large enough to be statistically sound.
4.
If the team had completed the research as originally planned and released their paper later, they might have missed the opportunity to have their paper discussed on national news. Should this be a consideration in this situation? Why or why not?
I believe quality over quantity should have been the standard on this paper, therefor I do not think this should have been considered in this situation. The quality behind the statistics should have taken precedence over the early release of the paper. While having their paper discussed on national news with Elizabeth may have been missed, it does not mean that the paper or Elizabeths chance for that matter would have passed. The publications that Elizabeth and her team release makes its way to the news and politicians as it is. Again, this should not be considered especially since significant information such as the validity of the sample was not mentioned. If Elizabeth truly felt this was an opportunity that she could not miss to discuss the paper, then I feel she could have mentioned this is ongoing research that has not been completed thus far.
