WEEK 7: Case study On Ethics
Good evening Professor and class,
1
.
Based on this information, what type of ethics is Elizabeth practicing—egoism, utilitarianism, or altruism? Why do you categorize her ethics this way?
Elizabeth is practicing egoism in her approach to the gun control survey. Elizabeth has personal goals she wants to achieve, and she has prioritized those goals rather than the validity of the survey. Her desire to be interviewed on television outweighed her desire to conduct a quality survey.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the way Elizabeth handled this situation? What should she have done differently?
I disagree with the way Elizabeth handled this situation. Elizabeth works for a major university, and she has behaved in
a way that could compromise the integrity of the university. Her interview would go very poorly, if the interviewer identified the reduced number of people surveyed. Her results
would not be considered accurate, and her reputation could be
damaged. In that scenario, Elizabeth may never be asked to participate in an interview again. Additionally, she could even lose her job as the leader of the research team if the results of
her research are proven invalid.
3. Do you agree or disagree with the way her team handled this situation? What should her team have done differently?
I also disagree with the way Elizabeth's team handled this situation. The team should have spoken with Elizabeth to articulate the dangers of releasing the results of an incomplete survey. Her team seems to be influenced by Elizabeth's leadership style, and they may even have ideas that they would receive some recognition themselves if Elizabeth were recognized. The team went further than
submitting the survey too early and purposefully omitted critical information that would properly identify the parameters of the survey. The team should have also included
the survey parameters to maintain the team's integrity.
4. If the team had completed the research as originally planned and released their paper later, they might have missed the opportunity to have their paper discussed on national news. Should this be a consideration in this situation? Why or why not?
I do not think the possibility of a television interview should have been a consideration. The fact that the data is valid should be the main focus of the research team. The consideration should be what is best for the university and the
research team's integrity, not Elizabeth or her team's individual aspirations.
