MTH/215T: Quantitative Reasoning I - May 16 to June 19 Week 2 Discussion - Solving Everyday Problems [Initial response due by Thursday; two follow-up responses due by Monday] Week 2 Discussion - Solving Everyday Problems [Initial response due by Thursday; two follow-up responses due by Monday] Wk 2 - Readings and Assignments [due Mon] Discussion Topic Post a total of 3 substantive submissions over 2 separate days for full participation. This includes your initial response and 2 replies to classmates or Deb. The late policy does not apply to participation and no late participation will be graded. Please review the grading rubric for information on how your responses will be graded. Due by Thursday This week, we learn about solving everyday problems. Respond to the following discussion prompts in a minimum of 175 words: Please describe a situation from your present or past professional or personal life that required you to compare, understand, and make decisions based on a quantitative comparison. Be sure to describe the type(s) of quantitative comparisons you had to make, what decisions you made, and why. I would’ve never thought that deducing what meal to get my children from Chick fil a would be considered a form of quantitative comparison. When my kids were smaller, they loved eating at Chick fil a. I would do what most parents did, which is get each of them a kids meal without thought, but then I noticed not all the food would be eaten, so I decided to create them a meal and it ended up coming out a little cheaper with no wasted food. The 5 chicken nugget kids meal is $5.85. I have 3 kids so that totals $17.55 plus 7% tax the total is $18.78. However, if I got them a 12-count nugget meal for $10.55 and add a 5-count nugget for $3.05 the total is $13.60 plus 7% tax the total is $14.55. For me, this made more sense because each of the smaller kids could get 4 nuggets a piece, and the oldest would get 9 nuggets and they would split the fries. This of course would not work now, but when they were toddlers, this was perfect! After looking over the information it only made my previous decisions make more sense. My problem was the kids didn’t eat all their food when I ordered them individual meals, so I was wasting food and money. To resolve this problem, I needed to find a way to not waste food and that ended up saving me money.
Would your decision be different if you had the benefit of learning this week’s concepts? Why or why not? Explain the math behind your reasoning, setting up a problem and solving it. Use the information in your readings to inform and guide your response. Due by Monday Post 2 substantive replies to your classmate's or Deb's posts. Be constructive and professional. Make certain that your replies add academic substance to the discussion. While there is no word count requirement for replies, your posts will be graded based on academic content and relationship to the learning objectives for the week. Use the information in your readings to inform and guide your response.
