Module 5 Assignment: Philosophy of Education
The great Martin Luther King Jr. once stated that “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” How as educators can we strive to help our young and older students
maintain intelligence and build their character? From the inside, as educators, we know that education is not just what we teach our students. We recognize and understand that students learn so much more at school than just what comes from books and worksheets. They learn social direction, manners, responsibilities, and even some hard lessons. Most children spend more time with their teachers and classmates than they do their parents during the school weeks. We, as educators, know our influence on our students is more than what we teach them academically.
In my opinion, students need basic skills in school. They need to learn to read, write and do math. Advance math options should not be requirements; they should be electives. In place of advance subjects, we should be placing high school students in classes that will prepare them for the real world. They need to learn about work ethic, taxes, resumes, job interviews, etc. I also do not believe that high school should force college onto students. The days of college being the way to have a successful career has long past. Now given, the career fields that you can become the most successful in without a college degree are male driven career fields, this does not mean that a woman pursue these career choices. Career fields such as nuclear power, welding, construction, electrical and other trade jobs are all very much career fields college that do not require college degrees but have decent pay. All these careers can start with a class and skill taught in high school. Some schools do offer courses like these. In my county students can graduate high school as a C.N.A., with a certificate in welding or
automotive and several other areas. This can benefit them in the work field or if they choose to continue onto the college route.
The proper roles for teachers and students in today’s education are interchanging. I believe that the traditonal belief of teachers simply being teachers, and students being just the learners does not coincide with today’s society. The teacher plays many roles inside the classroom. They are not only teachers, but parent figures, nurses, counselors, as well as wearing many more hats within her 8 hour period with the students. It is my belief that simply put, the proper role for the teacher is to be the adult and the guiding figure in the classroom. Of course, there is the understanding that the adult, the teacher, plays many significant roles and sets an example of a life long learner, a model citizen, and an over all role model.
Learning should be measured in a variety of ways. This is simply due to the fact
that students learn in a variety of ways. Test can be used to monitor and track for an
idea of progress, but not all students are test takers, therefore, tests are not always an
accurate depiction of what a student knows and has learned throughout the school year.
I also feel like like learning should not be measured by a timer (such as timed
testing). This causes instant anxiety and a feeling of failure for many students especially
those that already suffer with learning disabilities and insecurities. I also feel that using
testing to measure the success rate of a teacher based on a classroom of students that
also have lives outside of the classroom that interfere with their school life and work is
not only an insult to educators, but honeslty ridiculous. That would be like a doctor being
rated on how well a patient follows medical advice and takes their medications and not
on how well they admistored care to the patient themselves.

In conclusion, a major role a teacher plays in the lives of their students is
instilling confidence into their lives inside and outside of the classroom. It is a crucial
part of their learning experience and truly benefits them later on in life. No student
remembers a teacher that taught a subject, but generally a story about how they made
them feel about something they cared about or found a way to teach them the subject in
the best way for them to make them love that subject too.
