What motivating factors lead individuals toward extremism?
Hello class and instructor, Many factors can be involved when someone is heading towards extremism. First, I would like to explain
what extremism is; Extremism is when someone strongly believes in radical beliefs or extreme ideas. These extreme ideologies may include ideas such as bringing radical government system changes or supposing that some races are superior to others. They could think that such measures as violence are considered necessary to accomplish their purpose. However, not all extremists support terrorism. Some may choose peaceful methods to promote their ideas, while others might think that violence is necessary to bring change. In other words, an extremist is someone who holds strong opinions regarding
radical ideas, which can eventually lead to supporting acts of terrorism if it is needed.
Based on our reading this week there are multiple sources that talk about an individual heading towards extremism. One example could be social identity, in the article ‘The Staircase to Terrorism: A Psychological Exploration’ Moghaddam, Fathali M (2005) discusses how an individual may feel belittled or left out by society and might turn to extremist groups as a source of identity and belonging, finding a sense of community and purpose within them. Another motivating factor is political injustice, ‘Exploring the “Root Causes” of Terrorism” by Newman (2006) Edward, talks about how extremism often stems from the perception of injustice, discrimination, and oppression. Leading individuals to resort to extremist ideologies addressing the wrongdoing by governments or other groups. Religion being one of the most common factors towards extremism, it is a powerful help both in identity
and in gaining a sense of purpose. People who are lonely or alienated might feel like they are part of a community and have a sense of belonging in extremist organizations typically because they use religious
texts and teachings to explain their actions.
These are the most common motivating factors I believe play a crucial role in an individual headed toward extremism. Even if it is one reason or another these individuals strongly hold a belief that acting out in violence is the only way to make changes. I look forward to hearing about other motivating factors you all believe can lead an individual toward extremism. Have a good week!
