SAME SEX MARRIAGE
Part 1: Ethical Question
Is it moral for legal marriage to be available to couples of the same sex?
Part 2: Introduction
When you think of the word marriage what comes to mind? When I think of the word marriage I tend to think of a union between man and women coming together to share the rest of their lives together. However, I now know that marriage is no longer restricted to just a man and woman marrying one another. We know this due to the a historic ruling in 2015 case Obergefell v. Hodges, that made it legal for two people of the same sex to marry one another nation-wide (Thames, B., 2018).
This is a very important and controversial because as we know not long ago this was not allowed
nor accepted. However, the view on same sex marriage has seem to change over time with only 27% of Americans that supported this issue and 68% opposing it, but by 2016 to 61% were in support versus 37% that opposed (Thames, B. 2018, ch. 10, para 2). The term conjugal view was defined by philosophers Robert George, Sherif Girgis, and Ryan Anderson that defined marriage as the union of one man one woman (Thames, B. 2018, sec 2, para 4). Another term we will be looking at is conjugal unity which could be defined as bodily unity between two persons. However, to this can only be accomplished through coitus, which is only possible between a male and female (Thames, B. 2018, sec 2, para 8). Therefore, by definition, marriage is a comprehensive unity of hearts, minds, wills and bodies, which would only be possible between a male and a female (Thames, B. 2018, sec 2, para 8).

Part 3: Position Statement
By definition of the word marriage it can only be ethical or moral for two people of the opposite sex to marry one another. Part 4: Reasons in Support of Your Position
One of the main reasons for supporting my position is inability for two people of the same sex to able to reproduce and raising children. For example, how could members of the same sex effectively raise a child of the opposite sex without any kind of bias? Another support for my position comes in the form of an article titled, what is Marriage? In this article the author talks about conjugal view and the deontological claim that they are violating a fundamental right to marriage and wonders if by definition is any possible for them?
Part 5: Opposing Position Statement
One argument that supports same sex marriage would be the utilitarian viewpoint of the greatest good for the greatest number while creating the least amount of harm or preventing the greatest amount of suffering. Overall, same sex marriage does not affect in a bad way besides the fact that it is not a traditional norm. Part 6: Reasons in Support of the Opposing Position
In closing, if I use the utilitarian approach, in which I am a fan, I would not disagree that there would be greater overall happiness if marriage rights were extended to same sex couples as to

traditional household marriages. A traditional household would involve both parents, but that is not the case in a lot of homes and many children have turned out fine.
