Class Notes! What is the study of ethics? -
Ethics examines human life, experiences, and thinking in order to discover, discuss, and develop guidelines and
values for leading our human existence. In this course (PHIL222) we will deal with ethical theories as they apply to the medical field and to all matters of human care both as healthcare providers and as individuals responsible for the care and welfare of ourselves and others. -
This course entails studying the major ethical theories of
utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics, as well as the issues surrounding reproductive rights, advanced directives, cultural differences in moral beliefs, and privacy concerns and laws.

By the end of this course, students should be able to understand the power and also the limitations of personal moral judgments, to articulate the moral obligations of healthcare workers to the community, to appreciate and respect the ethical values of differing cultures, and to promote overall good decision making for themselves and those they serve in the medical profession or any caregiving capacity.
