Organizational Culture Worksheet What is your organization’s philosophy, mission, and vision? Philosophy: The Northwell philosophy of nursing practice embraces a healthy work environment as a milieu for the delivery of patient- and family-centered care, enabling healing and the highest level of health as well as ensuring a peaceful and dignified end of life. Mission: At Northwell Health, our mission is to improve the health and quality of life of the communities we serve through world-class service and patient-centric care. Vision: At Northwell, we strive to improve the health of the communities we serve and are committed to providing the highest quality clinical care; educating the current and future generations of healthcare professionals; searching for new advances in medicine through the conduct of biomedical research; promoting health education; and caring for the entire community regardless of the ability to pay What is your organization’s structure (i.e. hierarchy, team-based, matrix)? Please provide a brief description of your organization's structure. Our organization is set up in a hierarchy. It is broken down into different departments, senior leadership, population health, ambulatory services, Northwell holdings, strategic alliances, ambulatory strategy and business development, and out of network independent practice association. Although each team has its own head, VP etc. Michael Dowling ultimately trumps all as he is the President and CEO of all of Northwell. Identify opportunities for improvement within the current organizational culture. Are there gaps between the mission, vision and values and what you see every day in practice? If there are not any gaps, please describe how your organization’s structure and cultu re uphold the mission, vision and values of your clinical practice site. Please list three opportunities for improvement or how you your organization upholds its mission, vision and values. I do not believe there are any gaps and my organization's structure and culture uphold the mission by using things such as our clinical ladder program. The Northwell Health Clinical Ladder Program is designed to support our philosophy and is a framework for self-development to foster an exceptional, empowered environment. Such an
environment cultivates autonomy, community service, innovation, engagement with the decision-making process, evidence-based practice and the quest for new knowledge, professional development and leadership. Through a collaborative process, engaging frontline nurses and standardized, evidence-based, award-winning toolkits support best practices in areas of quality, safety and infection prevention. This is used throughout all Northwell sites. Northwell also has a great community impact. Northwell Health contributes more than $2.4 billion in community benefit (16.4% of operating expenses) by participating in more than 5,000 community health programs and training 39,000 health professionals. Lastly Northwell has committed to helping with education for high school students. Northwell Health and New York City Public Schools announced a partnership to design a career-focused high school that will help prepare students for well-paying careers in healthcare and address local education and healthcare talent needs. The Northwell School of Health Sciences will fully integrate healthcare career knowledge and job training with a high-quality, well-rounded high school experience for students in New York, graduating students directly into high-demand healthcare jobs with family- sustaining wages. 1. Your recommendations must be based on evidence-based practice. 1. Meeting staffing demands for existing patient care with an already diminished and exhausted nursing workforce.
2. Supporting the mental and emotional health of nurses. References About Northwell Health. (n.d.-a). https://www.northwell.edu/about-northwell Clarke, S. P. (n.d.).
