1 Biblical Worldview and Critical Thinking Assignment Cindy Gabrel Liberty University RLGN 105_003_202340 Dr. Lew Weider November 7, 2023
2 Part One: What is a Biblical Worldview? A worldview is how someone interprets and responds to the world around them as they live their life. It is an individual philosophy that is developed over time, while some people may say they do not have one it is ingrained in who we are as people. Having a biblical worldview means that someone discerns and makes decisions through the lens of the Bible and filters how they see things through that perspective. Some verses that reflect the importance of having a Bib- lical worldview and the dangers of not having one include, “ Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments,” (ESV Bible, 2019, Deuteronomy. 8.11) “For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God,” (ESV Bible, 2019, Romans. 8.7), “…be trans- formed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God.” (ESV Bible, 2019, Romans. 12.2), and finally “See to it that no one takes you captive by philoso- phy and empty deceit,”. (ESV Bible, 2019, Colossians. 2.8) These verses show that a Christian's worldview should look like a mindset aligned with God's will and prioritizing growth. (Word Count: 198) Part Two: Abortion Changes Lives One of the most controversial topics today is the issue of abortion. Those who are pro- choice, advocate for women to be given the choice to abort their unborn child. Those who are pro-life take the stance that the unborn are just as human as a grown adult and deserve to live. The general consensus is that if you are pro-choice you value the mother over the child and if you are pro-life you value them the same. Christians must not be silent about this matter and should stand out against abortion as the Bible tells us to defend those who can't defend them-
3 selves. An article on the ethics of abortion says, “The Christian churches can hardly ignore abor- tion; it not only tempts and harms their members, but also does grave harm to all involved in it” (Boyle, 2004) Even Among Christians there are those who believe that the Bible is ok with abor- tion. This article addresses the argument that the Bible does not care about the unborn by saying, “It is beyond doubt that the Old Testament holds fertility and the fruit of the womb in high es- teem.” (KRÜGER, 1973) This principle is highlighted in verses in the next section. (Word Count: 200) Part Three: Is Abortion Moral? When looking at the morality of abortion from a Christian perspective it is important to understand both arguments. One of the most well-known Bible verses about abortion Is (Jeremiah 1:5) which says how God values and knows unborn babies from conception. Another Bible verse to look to when dealing with abortion is, “…, you knitted me together in my mother's womb….” (ESV Bible, 2019, Psalm. 139.13-16) This is a great example of how God deliberately designs babies, and they are not just a clump of cells. A pitfall many fall into is excusing abor- tion by saying it is the right thing to do and that it helps the mother. While it may be true it is easier for those involved to get an abortion the Bible is clearly against excusing such actions. “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.” (ESV Bible, 2019, Isaiah. 5.20) God clearly values the unborn and there is no reason why we shouldn't either. In (Matthew 18.14) God is said to be unwilling to let any little one die and as Christians, we should follow his example. An inter- esting and almost saddening quote from an article on Abortion is, “… morality is usually equated with religion.” (Watson, 2019) This shows how far morality in the world has come, that we are

4 to the point that being moral and caring for others automatically can define you as religious, not just a good person. Tibor Imrényi hits the nail on the head when he says “One of the lamentable characteristics of our contemporary age is the way in which abortion has been adopted as a natu- ral part of the culture.” (Imrényi, 2013) Culture today says that abortion is just a part of life but Christians are called to stand apart from the crowd and this is no exception.
