A. List and explain the six principles or components of IDEA in
your own words.
1. zero reject-
Zero Reject is an amazing principle that allows any student
with a disability to get a free education. It does not matter what kind of disability or how serve it is, they can not be denied an education. This gives these students an opportunity, like the rest of the students, to receive an education. Zero reject is an IDEA principle, that I feel should always and forever be enforced. Without this principle, so many children will not have the same experience as other children.
2. nondiscriminatory evaluation-
Nondiscriminatory evaluation is a non bias and fair way to assess children with special needs. This has to be done in an appropriate and respectful manner. It helps determine
the student's exact disability. This also helps determine which way and how to teach the student. Using the nondiscriminatory evaluation, is a way to be sure no student feels judged or mistreated.
3. appropriate education-
Appropriate education is basically finding what education path is best fit for the student. These plans are decided by parents, educators, and the student occasionally. The appropriate education for a student, is what helps a student achieve their goals in the classroom. This helps the student do their best and achieve their best, with a plan that best suits them. 4. LRE-
Least restrictive environment is another IDEA principle that lets students with disabilities, to be educated equally with non-disabled students. It lets them be in the same classroom settings as other students. It allows them to be taught to the maximum extent possible with non-disabled students.
5. Procedural due process
The procedural due process is the IDEA principle that makes parents and school personal accountable for the disagreement between them. They take three different
steps to resolve their differences. In the first step, the parent and educator, tries to resolve their differences among themselves. In the second step, the result to mediation. They have a professional come in and listen to both sides and the mediator tries to make options to resolve the problem. In the third step, if the problem is not
resolved, they have the right to a due process hearing. 6. Parent and student participation-
With the parent and student participation principle, there is many rights under this principle. Parents have the rights
to receive any notices concerning their child. They also have the right to review their child’s records when ever they feel is necessary. With this being said, anything that invokes a child at school, the parents have their rights to know and participate in.
B. Appropriate education is one of the principles under IDEA to support special education’s focus on individualization. Create a compare and contrast graphic organizer such as a Venn diagram or table to note the similarities and differences in the IFSP and IEP plans for individualization.
