Critical Thinking
In my opinion, critical thinking is the ability to retain information, analyze, and make important decisions. Critical thinking is based on facts supported by evidence and free of biasness. Critical thinking requires an individual to understand situations from many different perspectives and thinking of alternative outcomes despite not always agreeing with them.
Heart of the Matter
Considering just what you read in Chapter 2.3 "Looking Ahead" why do you think the authors see Chapters 12, 13, and 14 as the "heart of the matter"?
I believe the authors seen chapters 12, 13, and 14 as the “heart of the matter” because they are essentially the most important chapters regarding the concept of critical thinking. Facione and Gittens (2016) states “These three set up the most powerful contrasts between how the members of our species think.” These three chapters argue different reasons including comparative reasoning, ideological reasoning, and empirical reasoning. Moreover, the authors thought these reasons were the foundation of decision making and therefore becoming an important part of our daily lives.
What do you think they meant by that?
I believe the authors were pretty straight forward with the fact that different forms of reasoning can have an impact on the way we think. Without the different forms
of reasoning, we would all lack the ability to form our own thoughts and
conclusions. The authors suggest that reasoning can lead to comparing and contrasting the way people think and it could become problematic. If that is true, it makes it seem like we have no control over our thoughts and are more susceptible to being influenced.
What two concepts did the authors say these chapters emphasized?
The authors say that these chapters emphasize the concepts of inference and explanation.
How do you define these concepts?
I would define the concept of inference as a logical step that allows someone to reach a conclusion based on evidence and reasoning. I would define the concept
of explanation as a statement made to clarify something and to make it more understandable.
Why do you think the authors find these concepts important to critical thinking?
I believe the authors found these concepts important to critical thinking because they play a huge role in how we think. Facione and Gittens (2016) says “reasoning often creates as many conflicts within our own minds as they create between ourselves and other people.” Inference and explanation are concepts we use in our day to day lives subconsciously. Both concepts are responsible for our thought process, argument making, and decision making.
What do you see as your greatest challenge for this session in general? For this class in
particular?
I believe my greatest challenge for this session will be juggling two strenuous courses compared to my first session in January. This is only my first semester at
Chamberlain and the first session wasn’t as difficult as this one is. This session I am taking two courses which are ‘Contemporary Mathematics’ and this ‘Critical Thinking’. After going over both syllabi and reviewing the coursework for each class, I have realized that this session requires more dedication. This class in particular will require me to analyze things from many points of views to come up with the best possible outcomes. As I have mentioned, this class requires a lot more dedication but it isn’t anything I can’t handle. I will pass this session and accomplish the goal I have set out for me.
How do you think you can use the concepts in the first three chapters to help you meet these challenges as well as challenges in your personal life as a member of your family and your community?
The first three chapters will help me with the challenges in the future of this class by setting the foundation of critical thinking which will allow me to retain and use information properly. I have always done well with reading and writing but this class will strengthen my skills. The same way I would utilize critical thinking in class, I can apply it to my personal life. The concepts learned throughout this course will help me excel in life. They will give me the knowledge and tools necessary to manage any situation. Facione and Gittens (2016) states there is a process called “IDEAS” and suggests that it could be used to improve problem

solving at any point by a person. The “IDEAS” process would be great to use when it comes to problem solving in personal areas of my life and within my community.
