Written Narrative Reflection (PLP 5) Perspective on and Role of Leadership Ethics My responses in the learning activity influence my perspective on leadership ethics. Ethics is defined as the values and morals of a person or society that are deemed acceptable or desirable (Northouse, 2021). Ethical theory provides guidance on what is considered a good or bad decision, providing the basis for understanding what is required to be a morally decent person (Northouse, 2021). When looking at the first situation, I chose to act ethically by reporting on my inactive group member. This was something I thought was necessary to maintain my ethical integrity. “The choices leaders make and how they respond in a given circumstance are informed and directed by their ethics” (Northouse, 2021, p. 422). Given that leadership decisions are based on ethical codes, I felt that deciding to report on my group member could be seen as me taking initiative and demonstrating strong leadership values. This illustrates a direct correlation between ethics and leadership, indicating that my response to the first situation was influenced by leadership ethics. When looking at the second situation, I chose not to report my coworker and he still ended up getting punished for his actions. This heavily influenced my perspective on ethics because there are situations where choosing not to report someone for being unethical can still lead to a favourable result. Influence of Future Decisions In the second situation, if I had chosen to report my coworker and it had resulted in him getting fired, I would have felt incredibly guilty. Considering that his actions were not affecting me personally, would it be considered immoral to report this person? This example helped me better understand that ethics is never black and white and can be quite complex. From analyzing my response to this activity, I feel that I am better equipped to handle ethical dilemmas in the future. Going forward, I will analyze whether my decisions are ethical based on how they will impact all parties that might be affected by my decision. Instead of just looking at ethics as one-dimensional, I will have a deeper understanding of how my decisions can be viewed as good or bad from multiple perspectives. Understanding virtue-based ethics versus teleological or deontological ethics helps develop a deep comprehension of the importance of different perspectives. Teleological and deontological ethical theories focus more on conduct, while virtue-based ethical theories focus more on character (Northouse, 2021). The second part of the discussion activity in the week demonstrated that you could achieve the same outcome by implementing different ethical theories. Overall, the learning activity, week 5 readings, and week 5 discussion helped provide insight into the importance of ethics in leadership and will help guide my decisions moving forward.
