Jalen Curry Teaching Philosophy Educators often approach their craft from one or several overarching theoretical frameworks, also sometimes referred to as pedagogies/instructional epistemologies. Why is it important to consider theoretical framework? Depending on your outcomes, you may find specific teaching methods/strategies fit better with your framework. You may also find certain frameworks mesh better with your content discipline. Additionally, awareness of a range of frameworks can promote productive experimentation and diversity of skill set. In my classroom I use different methods to promote learning among students in the class. Modeling is a strategy I use in my classroom every day. If I want my students to do something in the correct way, then I have to show how I want it done. Modeling is a strategy in which a competent reader reads aloud a portion of a high-interest, somewhat challenging story, while the less able reader listens and looks at the words being read. Modeling has its theoretical roots in Social Learning Theory by psychologist Albert Bandura (1977). Social Learning Theory identifies four factors in learning: attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Attention:  In order for a student to learn, they must be attentive to the teacher during instruction. Retention:  The information acquired must be placed in long-term memory. Reproduction:  The student must be able to reproduce the learned behavior. Motivation: Even if the above three conditions are met, the student must also want to display the learned behavior.
In my classroom I focus a lot on motivation and the theory of behaviorism. In my current school, many of our leaders advocate for behaviorism and have effectively adopted this system of rewards and punishments in their classrooms by rewarding desired behaviors and punishing inappropriate ones. Rewards vary but must be important to the learner in some way. I feel the strengths of Behaviorism in my classroom allows the learner to focus on one goal. It provides clear predictions about the behavior of learners under certain conditions like reinforcement or punishment. It also sates the specific and objective outcomes for learning. It emphasizes objective measurement. The role that I play in behaviorism in my classroom is to manipulate the environment to encourage the desired behavioral changes. The principles of behaviorism were not formed overnight but evolved over time from the work of multiple psychologists and with the help of what I have learned throughout college I am able to apply this in my classroom. In the philosophy of education when it comes down to teaching as a profession, there are things teachers should take into consideration. Teaching as a profession has many codes teachers have to abide by inside and outside of the workplace. The philosophy of education normally promotes a specific type or vision of education, and/or which examine the definition, goals and meaning of education. Many may not agree with behaviorism but in my classroom it works for myself and my students. I am the center of instruction in the behaviorist classroom. It is my role to ensure that the classroom is properly managed in order to ensure that student learning can take place. Many days my students are the center of instruction, and I am managing them. I like to have balance in my classroom. When I am teaching new concepts, I typically take the center to
instruct. The blend of various historical educational philosophies and the compromise between the teacher-centered and student-centered approaches to classroom activities is useful for creating a theoretical framework for my personal philosophy of education. The issue of deciding between various philosophies of education is related to the problem of choosing between teacher-centered and student-centered approaches to classroom activities as the most effective method for reaching the education targets. In my philosophy I believe both methods are needed to ensure the students gains the most in each lesson. As a teacher it can be very difficult when trying to figure out which approaches to take to reach students in education. I have seen for myself that students are motivated when they know something is in store for them and their behavior reflects this. An obvious advantage of behaviorism is its ability to define behavior clearly and measure behavior changes. While teaching I have been able to analyze behavior and give parents and other teachers a clear picture when I am the center of the classroom. My philosophy is to always put my students and their best interest first.
