DeAnna Davis PHI-1300 January ’24 Written Assignment 1 The topic I chose is “Childcare should be free in the US.” This topic typically has two sets of opinions which would be “yes it should” or “no it shouldn’t.” There are no groups that seem to be in-between on this topic. Before doing adequate research I personally believed childcare should be free. As a mother who had to leave jobs and give up good opportunities due to childcare, I feel that accessible and affordable childcare should be a basic right. After much research on the topic, I still believe childcare should be free in a sense. Research helped me see past my personal experiences and feelings to show that not only parents in the workforce are being affected but children of those parents are being affected as well. Research showed that children who had access to affordable childcare showed significant cognitive, social, and emotional development. 1. Do you believe your opinion would have been different if it had not been based on facts? If so, why, and how? I do not believe my opinion would be different had it not been based on facts. Since this was a situation that I have experienced personally, I feel like my experience is fact based and apart of the research. It is easy for someone who does not have children or has not been in the dilemma of trying to find adequate affordable childcare to think it is not a necessity. I do not think those people take into consideration the shortage of working people that inadequate childcare has caused. 2. Based on your experience with researching, do you think most people base their opinions about important issues on facts or do they use emotions, personal experience, preconceived ideas, and media to shape their ideas? Most people base their opinions on emotions, personal experience, preconceived ideas, and media. In today’s world social media, more specifically, is what a lot of people base their opinions on. I feel like today more than any other time period social media can be the cause of so much misinformation and opinions being passed along as facts. Based on my research one of the most popular opinions of people who are against free/affordable childcare is that childcare is a luxury and if parents cannot afford childcare, they should not have children. This opinion is simply based on preconceived ideas that poor families are having babies that they cannot afford but completely dismissing the fact that access to quality childcare is crucial for child
development and can be a determining factor in breaking the cycle of poverty. It is not only about individual choices but also about societal support for families. 3. In the future, do you think you will be more inclined to support your opinions with facts? Why? I do feel more inclined now to support my opinions with facts. Although my personal experience with childcare rings true and factual for me it may not be factual for someone else. With facts that support the need of affordable childcare, I do not have to provide my individual experience, I can simply provide the facts of it stimulating the economy, the reduction of poverty rates and the overall better health and wellbeing of children. It is easier to convince someone with facts instead of opinions because a fact is not based off experience or social media opinion, it’s based off research. 4. In future conversations with people of differing opinions, do you think you will press them to substantiate their opinions with facts and clearly defined reasons as a means of convincing you to change your thoughts? Why? I think it will depend on the purpose of the conversation. If the purpose of the conversation is to change my mind about my stance, then yes, I will require them to substantiate their opinions with facts. If the conversation is about simply a difference of opinion, I do not think facts will be needed because everyone is entitled to their own opinions. For the purpose of changing my mind, facts will be necessary because I already have my own opinion formed, so I will need to see all sides of the topic to determine if I am on the right or wrong side of the facts.
