Critical Thinking Activity #2
Read the article
Completing this task first thing in the morning takes seconds
—and it can make you more productive all day
and answer the following questions:
1)
What is this article’s claim, or what are you being asked to believe or accept?
a.
This article claims that if you take extra time in the morning to make your bed, you will be more productive throughout your day
and possibly live a more productive life.
2)
What evidence is provided in the article to support this claim?
a.
In this article, a survey was conducted by Best Mattress Brand, which included 1,000 participants. The survey resulted in discovering that people who made their bed in the morning frequently felt like it was essential to start their day on a good note (79%), felt a stronger sense of accomplishment early in their day (82%), felt accomplished at the end of their day (74%). In addition, another survey that was released last year discovered that you could tell a lot about one’s personality, including whether they perform this daily chore or not. Research found that people who make their beds appear more adventurous, confident, sociable, and high-maintenance. Statistically, 63% of people who make their bed start work right away and 37% take their time before bed. 3)
What alternative ways could
this evidence be interpreted?
a.
Bed making may not directly cause an increase in productivity, but rather a reflection of one’s mindset and approach to tasks/chores. Another possibility would be that participants in the
survey could have already been naturally organized and disciplined, which leads to a higher productivity level.
4)
What biases might impact your view of this article, its claim, and the evidence it provides?
a.
A bias that could impact my view on this article, its claim, and its
evidence would be where individuals who already believed that a
morning routine was important may feel more inclined to accept the article's findings. Another bias that would impact my view would be associating small tasks, such as bed-making, with significant impacts disregarding other factors that could contribute to increased productivity.
5)
What additional evidence would help you evaluate the
claim and alternative explanations?
a.
Additional evidence that could help evaluate the claim and alternative explanations could be conducting studies that track the daily habits and productivity levels of more than 1,000 individuals over an extended period. Possibly a specific group of people versus another to compare. In addition, considering if
people who make their beds are more disciplined and organized impacts their overall productivity. Any of these suggestions could
help prove or disprove whether bed-making consonantly leads to
increased productivity.
6)
What conclusions are most reasonable or likely?
a.
The most reasonable conclusion based on evidence would be that making your bed in the morning could contribute to increased productivity and a strong sense of accomplishment throughout your day. Another reasonable conclusion could also be that you may start to routinely do other tasks, possibly leading to more tasks being completed. It is important to consider that other factors out there may influence productivity, not solely on this one task and this task alone as a determining factor.
