Weekly Reflection
1)
Write a brief chapter summary (at least two full paragraphs) discussing the main points of each chapter. If more than one chapter was assigned, write a summary for
each chapter. In Chapter 3, we are introduced to how important it is for children to have a consistent schedule in class and by planning and creating these schedules, we are also considering the philosophy of Early Childhood. Early Childhood Philosophy reflects on the needs of children, the wishes of parents, the criteria for effective scheduling. By understanding these, we will then begin to understand the different needs for different age groups from infant to 5 or 6 years old. We must also be aware of child-initiated and adult-initiated activities and allowing children to have an equal balance of both. In Chapter 4, we are introduced to what a curriculum is and what we should think about adding into our curriculums. Having a written curriculum allows the school, the parents, and other teachers know of your goals that you have in mind for your students. When planning for the long-term curriculum, we must think of the outcomes we want to come with them along with short-term outcomes as well. We must keep in mind of the goals while keeping in mind of the parents and what they want for their children as well but also making sure we are staying within the national standards as well. 2)
Please share a topic from this week’s readings, lecture, or discussion board that you found to be the most interesting. Why is this topic interesting to you? In Chapter 3, nothing was interesting but more of a refresher and makes me miss working
at the preschool center. I guess we could say what I thought was interesting is how I watched the 3 classrooms I was able to work in actually go off of this schedule from small group to large group, quite activities, meal time, nap time for the younger ones and clean up time, to outside time and much more. In Chapter 4, this was another chapter that brought me back down memory lane. I had the
opportunity to learn all of these things while I was still taking CHDV 110 and thankfully had the chances to have the teachers show me and teach me how to set up the goals for each child and the whole classroom. That is when I started to see how they really put these goals into the things they teach and in their large and small groups as well.
3)
What new knowledge did you gain from this week and how will you apply it to your own children or the children you teach or will teach? In Chapter 3, I think the new knowledge I gained from this and what I want to make sure that I carry on to my children is having a set schedule. Not only is it important for the children we will teach but it is also important for our kiddos at home as well and I want to make sure I can do what is best for my daughter at home as I would for everyone else’s
children. In Chapter 4, I think nothing was new knowledge, but it does give me ideas on the kind of goals I would like to have in my classroom, I would also like these goals with my daughter. I want to be able to understand each child that comes in my path and I want to make sure their parents are a part of their growing minds.
