Three Ideas Proposal Idea #1 Criteria Ratings Pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Idea One: Description A short (3-5 sentences) description of the problem or opportunity being addressed was presented. Full details are not expected so do not grade low for lack of details. Only grade low if the problem is vague, too broad, does not make sense, etc 3 pts Criterion is fully met or exceeded 2 pts Criterion is met somewhat, but not completely 1 pts Criterion is met on a minimal level 0 pts Criterion is completely missing 3/3 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Idea One: Importance/Impact Importance/Impact: Importance/impact is explained. How big of a problem or opportunity is addressed? What are potential benefits if successful? How big is the impact? 3 pts Criterion is fully met or exceeded 2 pts Criterion is met somewhat, but not completely 1 pts Criterio n is met on a minimal level 0 pts Criterion is completely missing 3 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Idea One: Solution (Product) The solution (product) is described and makes sense. Again, full details are not expected at this point, so do not grade low for lack of details. Only grade low if the solution is missing, confusing, does not make sense scientifically, etc. 3 pts
3 pts Criterion is fully met or exceeded 2 pts Criterion is met somewhat, but not completely 1 pts Criterio n is met on a minimal level 0 pts Criterion is completely missing This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Idea One: Illustration At least one diagram, sketch, illustration, flow chart, etc. is provided. This should make sense and help to explain the idea and/or the solution. It should also be well-executed (neat/tidy, visually appealing, etc.) 3 pts Criterion is fully met or exceeded 2 pts Criterion is met somewhat, but not completely 1 pts Criterion is met on a minimal level 0 pts Criterion is completely missing 3 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Idea One: Creativity Idea and solution show creative, “outside of the box” thinking 3 pts Criterion is fully met or exceeded 2 pts Criterion is met somewhat, but not completely 1 pts Criterion is met on a minimal level 0 pts Criterion is completely missing 3 pts
This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Idea One: Reference Each idea has at least one reference from a reliable source (full points requires 3 reliable references) 3 pts Criterion is fully met or exceeded 2 pts Criterion is met somewhat, but not completely 1 pts Criterion is met on a minimal level 0 pts Criterion is completely missing 1/3 pts Missing two other reliable references Idea #2 This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Idea Two: Description A short (3-5 sentences) description of the problem or opportunity being addressed was presented. Full details are not expected so do not grade low for lack of details. Only grade low if the problem is vague, too broad, does not make sense, etc 3 pts Criterion is fully met or exceeded 2 pts Criterion is met somewhat, but not completely 1 pts Criterio n is met on a minimal level 0 pts Criterion is completel y missing 3 pts This criterion is linked to a Learning Outcome Idea Two: Importance/Impact Importance/Impact: Importance/impact is explained. Written Evaluation 1. For each idea, do you think it is feasible? If yes, what do you like best about it? If no, what are the major issues you see? a. For Idea #1, I think that it is fairly feasible as it goes into detail about a bacteria that would neutralize body odor and fully explains the idea behind removing the enzyme that does not produce the bad smell. I really like that they tried a more “biological” approach to this issue as I have personally found issues in modern-day deodorant and have always had to do a trial-and-error solution in order to find something that works for me. b. For Idea #2, I think that this is also fairly feasible since it talks about developing an mRNA vaccine to camouflage the cells from being destroyed by T cells, thus producing a normal skin cell. mRNA vaccines are still being researched, but I believe have been used to produce the COVID-19 vaccine in the past. While I don’t know how mRNA vaccines work in particular, the graphic that was provided as well as the explanation made the solution more realistic with more research. c. For Idea #3, I believe that this idea is feasible as it addresses the nuances of creating a nail polish that stops nail growth and promotes a more long lasting manicure. I have heard of a new technology where you take a pill that stops your nail growth, but since your hair and nails are both made of keratin, it also stops your hair growth. I think that if they addressed this or looked into this possibility and how to solve it, it would make this idea even more realistic. 2. Which idea is your favorite/the best? For this idea, do you have any specific thoughts you think the group should consider if moving forward with this particular idea? a. Personally, I really like the nail art idea (idea #3) as I deal with this same problem every time I am debating getting my nails done. It makes the expensive nail art that I got last longer and I think it would be very beneficial for those who frequently or desire to get their nails done. While I mentioned this before, the element that I think can be improved on is how to prevent the pill from stopping hair/toenail growth and only stop fingernail growth. They are all made of the same matter (keratin, I believe), so it would be interesting to see how they go about in solving this part of the issue, Overall, I think that this idea is well-thought out and while it isn’t a global or huge issue, it is something that many people interested in nail art struggle with, 3. Provide constructive feedback for the presentation overall. a. Overall, I really liked the presentation of the three ideas and they all explored topics that my group, or even myself, haven’t considered. I liked most of the illustrations and graphics, but the one thing I would say is to provide more graphics pertaining to the solution itself (what will the final product look like/work) so that it is easier for the audience to understand how exactly you are aiming to solve the problem. This suggestion is particularly on the last idea since it only has chemical structures rather than what the final product would look like.
