Quiz 1 Questions 1. How does Manfred Steger define the concept of i deology? A set of ideas and beliefs that an individual or group holds to be true. Steger adds that ideologies offer individuals a coherent picture of the world, not only as it is, but also as it should be. Like libertarianism, feminism, or Christianity guides and orients individuals as they go about their daily lives it enables them to make sense out of what they experience, and ideology does this by providing us with two things. It provides us with a lens or prism through which we view the world, and it provides us with the ability to process what we see. In short, Ideology gives meaning to what we perceive and affects how we respond to and act upon those perceptions as a result. Words like freedom or patriotism, justice will signify different things depending on who happens to be using them. 2. Let’s imagine you decide to tweet or, reply to Yang's statements, which he thoughts would resonate with the electorates Practical, not ideological. After stating your tweet, briefly explain why you chose that response. I would tweet saying your practical and not ideological is a claim that you free of ideology is an example of it. Someone that can certainly claim they are without an ideology and therefore poses the ability to see things objectively and without bias. But a person who makes such claims is merely expressing a belief that they hold to be true. The claim to be without an ideology is itself ideological. 3. Do you consider yourself an independent voter? Briefly explain why or why not. Yes, I am an independent voter. I used to say I am a Democrat but in the last few years I have chosen to vote Republican. I would say that I grew up thinking that I was a Democrat because I always heard my dad say he was a Democrat but as I grew older and got of age to vote I would vote for who I thought was the best candidate for our country.
4. How should we treat discussion boards and written assignments this semester? We should treat them as class participation and graded. The members were selected through a process called Sortition, which functioned like a lottery. 6. To what does the concept of Hegemony refer? Some religions think that women can only wear dresses and cannot cut their hair. Their hair must be long. While other religions women can do whatever they want to. 8. According to the authors of The Democratic Debate, what are the two fundamental questions to ask when attempting to evaluate different kinds of political participation or civic engagement in democracy? First, is a particular form of political participation- considered legitimate? Second, is a particular form of political participation, when directed toward a specific goal, also regarded as legitimate? 2
